Health Professionals Warn That Untreated Dehydration Can Lead to Serious Health Complications

Health professionals are warning Nigerians not to underestimate the dangers of dehydration, saying that failing to replace lost body fluids can lead to serious health complications, especially during periods of extreme heat, illness, or intense physical activity.

According to medical experts, dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in, making it difficult for the body to perform essential functions such as regulating temperature, transporting nutrients, and removing waste products.

Doctors explain that while mild dehydration can often be corrected by drinking enough fluids, untreated dehydration may progress and affect vital organs, increasing the risk of complications such as kidney problems, low blood pressure, heat-related illnesses, and, in severe cases, life-threatening conditions.

Health experts say common causes of dehydration include excessive sweating, prolonged exposure to hot weather, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, inadequate water intake, and strenuous exercise. Infants, young children, older adults, and people with chronic illnesses are particularly vulnerable because they may lose fluids more quickly or may not recognize the early signs of dehydration.

Medical professionals advise the public to watch for symptoms such as excessive thirst, dry mouth, dark yellow urine, reduced urination, dizziness, headache, fatigue, dry skin, and muscle cramps. In severe cases, dehydration may cause confusion, rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing, fainting, or extreme weakness, all of which require immediate medical attention.

Doctors recommend drinking water regularly throughout the day rather than waiting until thirst becomes intense. During hot weather or physical activity, individuals should increase their fluid intake to replace fluids lost through sweating. They also advise people suffering from vomiting or diarrhoea to replace lost fluids promptly and seek medical care if symptoms persist.

Experts note that oral rehydration solution can be especially helpful for people experiencing dehydration caused by diarrhoea or vomiting, as it helps replace both fluids and essential electrolytes lost by the body. However, severe dehydration may require treatment with intravenous fluids in a healthcare facility.

Health professionals also encourage parents and caregivers to monitor children closely for signs of dehydration. Babies who produce fewer wet diapers than usual, cry without tears, or appear unusually sleepy should be assessed by a healthcare provider without delay.

Medical experts caution that sugary drinks, excessive caffeine, and alcohol should not be relied upon for hydration, as some of these beverages can contribute to further fluid loss or fail to adequately replace essential electrolytes.

Doctors conclude that staying properly hydrated is one of the simplest ways to support overall health. They encourage Nigerians to drink adequate amounts of water daily, especially during hot weather or illness, and to seek prompt medical attention whenever signs of severe dehydration develop.
