Doctors Advise Against Excessive Use of Painkillers Without Medical Supervision

Medical experts are warning Nigerians against the frequent or excessive use of painkillers without proper medical supervision, cautioning that misuse of these medications can lead to serious health complications.

According to doctors, painkillers are effective for relieving headaches, muscle pain, toothaches, joint pain, and other forms of discomfort when used correctly. However, taking them too often, exceeding the recommended dosage, or using them for prolonged periods without professional guidance can increase the risk of harmful side effects.

Health professionals explain that commonly used pain-relieving medicines, including over-the-counter medications, are generally safe when taken as directed. Problems often arise when individuals self-medicate repeatedly without identifying the underlying cause of their pain.

Doctors warn that long-term or excessive use of certain painkillers may damage the stomach lining, increasing the risk of ulcers and internal bleeding. Some medications may also affect kidney function, while others can cause liver damage when taken in large amounts or combined with alcohol.

Medical experts also caution that frequent use of painkillers to treat recurring headaches may actually worsen the problem. This condition, known as medication-overuse headache, occurs when pain-relieving drugs are taken too often, leading to more frequent and persistent headaches.

Health professionals advise the public to seek medical evaluation if pain continues for several days, returns repeatedly, or is accompanied by symptoms such as fever, unexplained weight loss, swelling, difficulty breathing, numbness, or severe weakness. Persistent pain may be a sign of an underlying illness that requires proper diagnosis and treatment rather than repeated use of pain medication.

Doctors emphasize the importance of carefully reading medication labels, following dosage instructions, and avoiding the simultaneous use of multiple painkillers unless advised by a healthcare professional. They also warn against sharing prescription pain medications with family members or friends, as medicines that are suitable for one person may be harmful to another.

Experts recommend discussing all medications, including herbal remedies and dietary supplements, with a healthcare provider to reduce the risk of harmful drug interactions. People with existing liver disease, kidney disease, stomach ulcers, heart disease, or other chronic conditions should be especially cautious when using pain-relieving medicines.

In addition to medication, healthcare professionals encourage healthy approaches to managing certain types of pain. Depending on the cause, these may include adequate rest, physical therapy, regular exercise, stress management, proper posture, and the application of heat or cold therapy under professional guidance.

Doctors conclude that while painkillers play an important role in relieving discomfort, they should not be used as a substitute for proper medical care. They encourage Nigerians to consult qualified healthcare professionals whenever pain is severe, persistent, or recurring, as early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can prevent more serious health problems.
