IGP Egbetokun’s new police retraining initiative: A bold step or a desperate attempt to regain public trust?
DDM News

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the approval of comprehensive retraining and reorientation programs for all personnel within the Nigerian Police Force.
The decision was made during a virtual meeting on Monday, which saw the participation of key police officers, including Commissioners of Police (CPs), Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs), and members of the Force Management Team.
The move aims to promote professionalism and instill positive changes in the attitudes and behavior of officers while ensuring that they adhere to the established code of conduct during their duties.
The retraining initiative, as explained by IGP Egbetokun, is expected to lead to significant improvements in the policing system by fostering better attitudes and behaviors among officers.
The goal is to ensure that officers perform their duties with integrity, professionalism, and respect for the public, which are essential for maintaining law and order.
He emphasized that this retraining would help officers stay committed to upholding the standards set by the Force while maintaining public trust.
According to a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that the IGP’s approval includes the introduction of a mandatory weekly lecture series, which will be implemented across all units of the Force.
This retraining initiative, led by Police Chief Olumuyiwa Adejobi, is designed to facilitate continuous professional development at various levels, including Divisional, Area Command, and State levels.
The lectures will cover a range of important topics such as human rights, ethical conduct, community policing, and the responsible use of force.
While congratulating the officers for their successful efforts in tackling crime throughout 2024, IGP Egbetokun called on them to enhance their crime prevention strategies in order to make more significant strides in reducing criminal activities in 2025.
He acknowledged the challenges faced by police investigators, particularly within the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and proposed further specialized retraining for CID officers.
This advanced retraining would equip investigators with the necessary skills to handle increasingly complex and high-profile criminal cases with greater efficiency.
Egbetokun also highlighted the importance of integrating modern techniques and best practices into daily operations, stating that the new retraining would help police officers stay abreast of evolving legal frameworks and technological advancements in law enforcement.
Additionally, the retraining would provide police personnel with an opportunity for personal and professional growth by fostering a culture of continuous learning.
The weekly lectures will serve as a platform for knowledge-sharing and interactive discussions among officers, promoting a strong learning culture within the Force.
By incorporating interactive elements, the retraining program aims to foster an environment where officers can exchange ideas and insights on best practices in policing.
This, in turn, will help build a more effective and responsive police force capable of meeting the needs of the public.
Accountability, according to IGP Egbetokun, is critical to the success of the retraining initiative.
Supervisors will be held responsible for the actions of their subordinates, ensuring that misconduct is addressed promptly and appropriately.
This approach is designed to reinforce the importance of ethical behavior and responsibility within the Force at every level.
In his statement, the IGP reiterated his unwavering commitment to transforming the Nigerian Police Force into a more efficient, accountable, and transparent institution.
He emphasized that these efforts would not only improve the professional capacity of officers but also help restore the trust and confidence of citizens in the police force.
The introduction of these retraining programs and weekly lectures aligns with the broader goal of reforming the police force to better serve the public.
By equipping officers with the skills, knowledge, and ethical standards required for effective policing, IGP Egbetokun hopes to build a police force that is both more capable and more trusted by the communities they serve.
These retraining initiatives, once fully implemented, are expected to lead to a significant transformation within the Nigerian Police Force, resulting in improved law enforcement and better relationships between officers and the public.
The commitment to continuous improvement and professional development represents a positive step toward creating a police force that serves as a model for others.
