Clash at Lagos Assembly: Obasa’s supporters arrested amid impeachment controversy
DDM News

Several supporters of Mudashiru Obasa, the recently impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, were arrested and detained by security personnel after attempting to visit him at the Lagos Assembly complex.
These supporters, primarily prominent figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC) from various constituencies across Lagos, had gathered to express solidarity with the embattled Speaker following his removal from office.
The impeachment of Obasa, which took place earlier this month, has stirred significant political tension within Lagos.
Obasa, a long-time influential figure in Lagos politics and a key player within the APC, was controversially removed from his position as Speaker following allegations of misconduct and abuse of office.
His impeachment followed weeks of political maneuvering and discord within the Lagos Assembly.
Obasa’s supporters, many of whom have been loyal to him for years, believe his removal was politically motivated, orchestrated by rival factions within the ruling party.
Consequently, they have sought to show their unwavering support for him, despite the ongoing legal and political battles.
On the day of the incident, the group of APC chieftains assembled at the Lagos State House of Assembly, allegedly intending to meet Obasa in a show of solidarity.
However, upon arrival, they were intercepted by heavily armed security personnel stationed at the Lagos Assembly complex.
The supporters were detained and confined in a Black Maria vehicle that had been stationed near the premises.
The arrest of the group has caused further unrest and has been widely reported by media outlets, including Diaspora Digital Media (DDM).
The detainees, who appeared visibly distressed, were heard calling out for basic necessities such as food and water as they waited for the authorities to determine their fate.
This development has raised concerns about the handling of political dissent and the extent to which security forces are being used to control the flow of political activities in Lagos.
The arrest of Obasa’s supporters adds to the growing list of controversies surrounding the Speaker’s impeachment in Lagos.
It also reflects the deepening divisions within the APC, which has been struggling with internal conflicts that have, at times, spilled over into public view in Lagos.
The episode has ignited debates about the state of political freedoms and the use of security forces to suppress opposition within Nigeria’s political landscape.
The outcome of these detentions and the larger political fallout from Obasa’s impeachment in Lagos remain uncertain, but the incident has certainly added fuel to the ongoing political crisis in the state.
