The Maitama Police Division in Abuja is currently interrogating a lawmaker, Mr. Alexander Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives from Abia State over alleged assault.

He is being interrogated regarding an alleged assault on Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuyatseya, following the delivery of a package Mr. Ikwechegh had requested.

The Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Olatunji Disu ordered a comprehensive investigation into the alleged assault of a Bolt driver by the federal lawmaker.

According to Disu, “the investigation aims to ensure justice is served, and upon its completion, suitable legal action will be taken.

The police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, stated that “the Maitama Divisional Headquarters has received a report regarding an incident involving a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya and Alexander Ikwechegh, who represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State.”

The incident occurred on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.

“The Bolt driver reported the incident to the authorities, stating that a dispute arose over the delivery method, leading to the alleged physical assault.

According to the Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), the FCT Police Command expressed concern over Ikwechegh’s dismissive attitude toward the office of the Inspector General of Police, demonstrating a troubling disregard for law enforcement authority.

Earlier on Monday, a video circulating on social media reveals an incident wherein Ikwechegh verbally reprimanded the Bolt driver for requesting that he pick the package he ordered from the vehicle.

In the video, Ikwechegh expressed strong objection to the Bolt driver’s request for payment, characterizing it as a personal affront.

He explicitly stated his refusal to pay the driver, citing his esteemed position as a rationale for exemption.

During the exchange, Ikwechegh was recorded saying: “Are you aware of my identity? I refuse to pay you, and no authority can intervene. Feel free to contact the Inspector General of Police.”

But the Bolt driver, who was apparently unaware of who Ikwechegh is, insisted on collecting his money.

At a point in the viral video, he said, “I don’t care to know who you are, just pay me my money and let me go.”

In response, Ikwechegh landed a slap on his face, and the Bolt driver was heard saying, “you slapped me two times.”

The viral video has since sparked controversies on social media, calling for the arrest of the legislator for doing such a thing.

APGA’s reaction to Ikwechegh’s actions

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), through its National Publicity Secretary, Mazi Ejimofor Opara in a statement stated that “we strongly condemn the alleged assault of a Bolt driver by Alex Ikwechegh, a House of Representatives member representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency, at his Abuja residence.”

“The party disapproved of Ikwechegh’s actions, which were captured in a viral video showing him berating and threatening the driver.”

The statement further emphasized, “as a political party committed to upholding human rights, we strongly condemn the actions of our member, Alex Ikwechegh.”

“His behavior is incompatible with our party’s values and principles.”

“As a political party, we are committed to upholding the inherent dignity and respect of every human being, irrespective of class, creed, or ethnicity, and we strongly condemn any actions that contravene these values.”
