INSECURITY: Bandits Using Victims As Human Shield Against All Out Attack From Security Agency– Expert
Kabir Adamu, leading security expert in the country, has stated that security agencies are not altogether unaware of the veritable use of National Identification Number, NIN, neutralizing bandits and rescuing abducted victims, rather, according to him, security operatives are placed in delicate situations where they can’t risk lives of victims in rescue attempt.
Adamu, MD, Beacon Consulting, a security firm, made this analysis while on Arise Television, on Wednesday, in response to questions why security agencies are not utilizing well enough, the National Identification Number, NIN, that has been emplaced in almost a decade.
The NIN is used to tie all records about an individual in a national database and also used to establish or verify a person’s identity.
All Nigerian citizens and legal residents in Nigeria from age zero (birth) and above are eligible to enrol for their NINs.
Former Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, reacting to spate of abductions in the nation’s capital, recently, said that security agency are not availing themselves the use of the NIN to fight banditry and rampant cases of abduction.
But Adamu see the problem from practical point of view.
“I can tell you that security agencies avail themselves the use of NIN. I know this because I work with them.
“Let me also assure you that in most cases of these abduction, they know their locations.
“But a rescue attempt is an altogether different ball game in fighting a crime of this nature,” he said.
The analyst said that security agencies in the country are yet to acquire required proficiency to levy precision attacks.
“They can’t afford to kill victims in an all out attack.
“The precision aspect of our operations are what we need to work on,” he said.
