ABUJA, NIGERIA — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced a downward review of its nomination fees for elective positions, following appeals from party members and stakeholders.

The decision, approved by the party’s national headquarters, is aimed at making the electoral process more accessible and encouraging broader participation across different demographics.

Under the revised structure, the presidential nomination fee has been reduced to ₦90 million, while governorship aspirants are now required to pay ₦30 million.

For legislative positions, the Senate nomination fee is set at ₦10 million, while aspirants for the House of Representatives will pay ₦5 million.

Candidates seeking seats in State Houses of Assembly are expected to pay ₦2 million under the new arrangement.

Party officials stated that the review reflects the ADC’s commitment to internal democracy and inclusiveness, especially in response to concerns raised by members about the high cost of contesting elections.

In addition to the reduction, the party introduced a 25 percent discount on nomination fees for youths, women, and persons with disabilities, as part of efforts to promote greater representation.

The ADC noted that the policy is designed to empower underrepresented groups and encourage more Nigerians to actively participate in the political process.

Political observers say the move could increase competition within the party by lowering financial barriers that often limit participation in Nigeria’s electoral system.

They also note that high nomination fees have long been criticised for discouraging capable candidates who may lack financial resources but possess leadership potential.

The ADC’s decision comes amid broader national conversations about electoral reforms and the need to make politics more inclusive and accessible.

Stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a step in the right direction toward deepening democracy and expanding political participation.

However, analysts caution that while reduced fees may encourage participation, other challenges such as campaign financing and party structures still play significant roles in determining electoral outcomes.

The party urged interested aspirants to take advantage of the revised fees and prepare for upcoming electoral activities in line with party guidelines.

As political activities gradually intensify ahead of future elections, the ADC’s policy shift is expected to influence internal party dynamics and potentially attract new entrants into the race.
