Iranian authorities have executed a man convicted of deliberately driving his car into police officers during anti-government protests in Karaj in January.

Shahram Sadeghi was executed early Sunday after Iran’s Supreme Court upheld a death sentence handed down by the Karaj Revolutionary Court, according to the judiciary and the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

Sadeghi was accused of driving into police officers during the January 8 protests, injuring seven officers. One of the officers was reportedly left in a coma for three months.

The court sentenced Sadeghi to death and ordered the confiscation of his assets over what Iranian authorities described as an “operational action” in support of Israel, the United States and hostile groups under the country’s espionage law.

The execution comes amid heightened tensions in Iran following a series of anti-government protests and a wider crackdown on people accused by authorities of supporting foreign powers.

Iranian authorities have previously used national security and espionage charges in cases involving protesters accused of attacking security personnel or collaborating with hostile states.
