Juventus have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Bologna for the transfer of Colombian defender Jhon Lucumí, with the Italian giants now preparing to complete the formal stages of the deal.

The proposed transfer is understood to be worth €20 million including add ons, with the remaining administrative procedures expected to be completed within the next 48 hours before the defender undergoes his medical examination at the weekend.

Lucumí’s preference has also played an important role in the negotiations. Despite interest and proposals from other clubs, the Colombian international reportedly made Juventus his preferred destination and remained determined to move to Turin.

If the final formalities are completed successfully, Lucumí will become another important defensive addition for Juventus as the club continues to reshape its squad ahead of the new Serie A campaign.

The 28 year old centre back arrives with considerable European experience and a reputation for being a physically strong, composed and technically capable defender. His ability to operate in a back three or back four is expected to give Juventus additional tactical flexibility.

Born in Cali, Colombia, on April 26, 1998, Lucumí developed his footballing abilities at Deportivo Cali. He progressed through the club’s youth system before making his senior debut and quickly establishing himself as one of Colombia’s promising young defenders.

His performances in Colombia eventually attracted attention from Europe, leading to a move to Belgian side Genk in 2018.

The transfer represented an important stage in his development. Lucumí spent several seasons in Belgium, gaining experience in domestic competition as well as European football. His performances also helped him establish himself as a regular member of the Colombian national team.

During his time at Genk, the defender became known for his ability to read the game, recover possession and contribute to building attacks from the back. His left foot also made him particularly valuable in systems that require a centre back capable of progressing the ball from defence.

Bologna eventually secured his services in 2023, bringing him to Serie A and providing him with another opportunity to test himself in one of Europe’s most tactically demanding leagues.

His move to Italy proved to be another significant step forward.

At Bologna, Lucumí developed into an important member of the defensive unit and gained valuable experience against some of the best attacking players in Italian football. His performances also came during a period in which Bologna established themselves as one of Serie A’s increasingly competitive teams.

The Colombian’s defensive qualities have now attracted the attention of Juventus, who see him as a player capable of strengthening their backline.

One of Lucumí’s biggest strengths is his composure when dealing with pressure. Rather than simply relying on physical challenges, he is comfortable positioning himself intelligently and using his reading of the game to prevent attacks before they become dangerous.

His pace is another useful attribute. For a central defender, the ability to recover quickly can be particularly important when playing for a team that pushes its defensive line higher up the pitch.

Lucumí’s experience in different tactical systems could also help him adapt at Juventus.

The defender has played in both four man and three man defensive structures during his career. That versatility could prove useful for Juventus as they continue to adjust their tactical approach depending on opponents and match situations.

His international experience is equally valuable.

Lucumí has represented Colombia at senior level and has been part of the national team’s defensive setup for several years. Playing international football has exposed him to different styles and attacking profiles from across South America and beyond.

That experience should help him handle the pressure associated with joining one of Italy’s biggest clubs.

Juventus have historically placed enormous expectations on their defenders. Players arriving in Turin are expected to perform immediately, particularly in Serie A matches where defensive organisation and tactical discipline are essential.

Lucumí’s time at Bologna means he already understands the demands of Italian football, which could make his transition easier than that of a defender arriving from another league.

The reported €20 million package also represents a significant investment from Juventus.

The club are not simply signing an experienced defender for short term cover. At 28, Lucumí remains at an age where he can provide several years of high level football while bringing valuable experience to a squad containing several younger players.

His arrival could also increase competition within the Juventus defence. Strong competition for places can be particularly beneficial over a long season involving Serie A, domestic cup competitions and European fixtures.

For Bologna, meanwhile, the departure of Lucumí would represent the loss of an experienced defensive player who has become an important part of the club’s recent progress.

However, a €20 million transfer package would provide Bologna with funds to reinvest in their squad and potentially bring in a replacement before the transfer window closes.

For Lucumí, the move is the latest stage of an impressive journey that began in Cali and took him through Colombian football, Belgium and Serie A before reaching one of Italy’s most decorated clubs.

The fact that he reportedly rejected other possibilities in favour of Juventus underlines his desire to make the move happen.

The next major step will be the completion of the paperwork and his medical examination.

Assuming there are no unexpected complications, Juventus are expected to formally complete the transfer after the weekend medical.

For the Bianconeri, the signing could prove to be a valuable addition to their defensive options. For Lucumí, it represents an opportunity to take his career to another level and compete for major honours with one of European football’s historic giants.
