Kanu denounces prosecution witness as paid mercenary, not DSS agent
DDM News

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has strongly rejected the credibility of the second prosecution witness presented against him.
According to Diaspora digital media (DDM), he described the witness, known as PW2 and codenamed BBB, as a paid mercenary, not an operative of the Department of State Services (DSS) as claimed by the prosecution.
Kanu made this declaration during his ongoing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
The court session saw heated reactions from IPOB following the presentation of the masked witness by the Nigerian government.
In a statement released by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group condemned what it described as a deliberate distortion of the day’s proceedings by certain media outlets.
Powerful insisted that the media reports which claimed Kanu admitted to inciting violence against the police were false and malicious.
According to the statement, the prosecution’s second witness is completely unknown to Kanu.
Kanu told the court openly that he had never seen or interacted with the individual before.
He accused the prosecution of hiring individuals to fabricate testimony against him.
IPOB argued that the masked witness was deployed to manipulate judicial proceedings and mislead the public.
The statement noted that the prosecution had presented no concrete evidence to support its claims, even after four years of dragging the case through the courts.
According to IPOB, this failure clearly reflects the weakness of the case and the lack of credibility of the prosecution’s strategy.
The group claimed that the prosecution has consistently failed to serve necessary documents and witness statements, in violation of legal procedures.
Justice James Omotosho, who presided over the proceedings, reportedly cautioned the prosecution about these procedural lapses.
He urged them to serve all required processes and exhibits in accordance with the law.
IPOB praised the judge’s insistence on due process and fairness, describing it as a welcome stance in a trial marred by government manipulation.
Powerful stated that the masked witness, presented as a DSS officer, is not affiliated with the DSS national headquarters in Abuja as claimed.
He emphasized that the witness’s anonymity only serves to further raise doubts about the integrity of the testimony.
Out of respect for the court and the presiding judge, IPOB said it has refrained from exposing the identities of these masked individuals.
However, the group warned that if the prosecution continues using paid agents to testify, IPOB may be compelled to reveal their identities, addresses, and family details.
According to the group, this measure would become necessary to protect the truth and expose what it described as an orchestrated persecution.
IPOB condemned what it called a calculated effort by the Nigerian government to fabricate evidence and silence a legitimate movement.
They dismissed the claim that Kanu admitted to inciting public unrest as a distortion of facts.
The group revealed that during cross-examination, the witness admitted he had no knowledge of the allegations and could not verify them.
These same allegations, IPOB pointed out, had previously been struck out by the court.
Despite this, the media reported the statement as a confession by Kanu, a move IPOB labeled as disgraceful and dishonest.
They accused certain media outlets of spreading anti-Biafra propaganda and engaging in ethnic bias against the Igbo population.
Powerful insisted that the trial has become a platform for political persecution rather than a genuine legal process.
He further stated that IPOB will continue to resist any attempts to misrepresent the Biafran cause or damage the reputation of its leader.
The group described the case as an embarrassment to Nigeria’s judiciary and a shameful abuse of legal procedures.
According to the statement, the prosecution’s failure to present evidence after four years exposes the agenda to keep Kanu detained through manipulation.
IPOB reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to achieving justice for Kanu and securing Biafra’s self-determination.
The group declared that it would not be discouraged by government intimidation or media complicity.
They urged the public to pay attention to the Nigerian government’s failure to meet legal standards rather than being distracted by side stories.
Powerful also criticized the exclusion of Kanu’s sister-in-law from the courtroom over what he described as a minor infraction.
He called it another attempt to divert attention from the incompetence of the prosecution’s case.
The group appealed to people of conscience within Nigeria and abroad to support the quest for truth and justice.
They invited international human rights organizations and legal observers to monitor the trial and speak out against abuses.
IPOB urged the media to report accurately and avoid becoming tools in the hands of a desperate state.
They emphasized that justice must not only be done but also be seen to be done.
According to IPOB, no amount of falsehood can extinguish the legitimate demand for Biafran self-rule.
They stated that their movement is peaceful and grounded in the principles of justice and democracy.
IPOB warned that the continued use of deceptive tactics by the state could destabilize public trust in the judicial system.
They maintained that the truth about Kanu’s trial will ultimately prevail.
The group concluded that the Nigerian government cannot win the battle of public perception through propaganda and lies.
They called on the world to stand with them in exposing the truth and defending the rights of oppressed peoples.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) will continue to track the developments of this high-profile trial and provide accurate updates from the courtroom.
