BIRNIN KEBBI, Nigeria — Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has approved the creation of a new district in Suru Local Government Area as part of efforts to strengthen traditional administration and improve grassroots governance across the state.
The governor also approved the elevation of the Village Head of Tarasa, giving the community a higher traditional status within the state’s chieftaincy structure. The decision is expected to enhance local administration and improve coordination between traditional institutions and government authorities.
According to the state government, the creation of the new district followed consultations with relevant stakeholders and traditional rulers. Officials said the move was aimed at bringing governance closer to the people, promoting peace and improving the delivery of government services at the grassroots level.
Governor Idris said traditional institutions remain vital partners in maintaining peace, resolving community disputes and supporting development initiatives. He noted that strengthening the traditional leadership system would help improve security, social cohesion and effective communication between government and local communities.
The governor urged the newly elevated traditional ruler to discharge his responsibilities with fairness, integrity and dedication to the welfare of his people. He also called on residents of the affected communities to support the new administrative structure and cooperate with traditional authorities in promoting peace and development.
Community leaders welcomed the governor’s decision, describing it as a significant step toward improving local administration and recognising the growing importance of Tarasa within Suru Local Government Area.
