Lagos cracks down on Abattoir for reckless health violations

The Lagos State Government has immediately closed Oko-Oba Abattoir in Agege after uncovering shocking environmental violations.

Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab announced the drastic move on June 19, 2025, via X (Twitter).

Consequently, the facility’s reckless practices endangered public health, forcing authorities to act swiftly.

During a joint inspection, officials discovered operators dumping animal waste into public drains and nearby Forth-Walt Farm.

Moreover, blood and wastewater flowed untreated into drainage systems, violating environmental laws.

Wahab condemned the actions, stating, “This reckless endangerment is unacceptable.”

Additionally, the Ministry of Agriculture had earlier petitioned against the abattoir’s illegal operations.

The commissioner warned that no business would evade sanitation laws.

“No one can ignore standards or hold our environment hostage,” he declared.

Therefore, a strict enforcement team—including LASEPA, LAWMA, and LASWMO—will monitor compliance.

Meanwhile, the abattoir remains shut until proper waste management systems are installed.

During the same inspection, Wahab visited Adetola Canal in Iju, where vandals damaged reinforcements.

He urged community leaders to protect public infrastructure, stressing that citizens must safeguard government projects.

Furthermore, he called for collective action against environmental abuse.

Residents must pay PSP operators and reject illegal cart pushers, Wahab insisted.

Additionally, he revealed that 38 environmental offenders face prosecution this month.

Clearly, Lagos is cracking down on violators to ensure public safety.

The abattoir’s closure sends a strong message: flouting environmental laws will not be tolerated.

Businesses must comply or face shutdowns. Ultimately, the government prioritizes health and sustainability, demanding accountability from all stakeholders.

Lagosians must unite against environmental degradation.
