LASTMA impounds over 150 vehicles for traffic violations

Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has intensified efforts to curb traffic violations by commercial bus operators. Targeting ‘Korope’ minibuses, the agency now enforces strict penalties for unauthorized route changes and illegal parking. This crackdown aims to restore order and ease congestion across Lagos’s bustling streets.

Aligned with the state’s urban mobility agenda, Special Adviser on Transportation Hon. Sola Giwa condemned reckless practices.

He warned that violators would face immediate legal action, emphasizing that route deviations disrupt traffic flow and endanger lives.

Moreover, Giwa linked unauthorized routes to criminal activities, urging drivers to strictly adhere to the approved paths for safety.

Meanwhile, the agency actively addresses illegal parking, which greatly contributes to traffic gridlock throughout the city’s busy streets.

Giwa directed operators to use designated stops exclusively, noting that roadside loading blocks traffic and risks pedestrian safety. LASTMA officials have impounded over 150 vehicles this week, signaling unwavering enforcement.

Supporting this, LASTMA’s spokesman Adebayo Taofiq confirmed enhanced authority for officers to arrest offenders. “Indiscriminate parking and route violations threaten public safety,” he stated, emphasizing prosecutions will follow noncompliance.

Moreover, the public is encouraged to report violations via LASTMA’s toll-free line (080000527862). Residents can alert authorities to emergencies, breakdowns, or accidents, fostering collective responsibility. Commercial drivers must adopt lawful practices or risk fines and vehicle seizures.

Crucially, the state government prioritizes security, as criminals exploit illegal routes. By restricting buses to approved corridors, officials aim to deter kidnappings and thefts linked to rogue operators.

To bolster compliance, LASTMA collaborates with unions to educate drivers on regulations. Workshops emphasize adherence to traffic laws, while monitoring systems track repeat offenders for stricter penalties.

Ultimately, Lagos State reaffirms its commitment to transforming urban transport through accountability. Stringent enforcement, paired with public cooperation, seeks to create safer, efficient roads. Operators ignoring warnings risk losing licenses as the city marches toward order.

This initiative underscores a broader vision: a Lagos where discipline prevails, commuters thrive, and mobility fuels progress. With sustained vigilance, authorities believe lasting change is within reach.
