Mateta’s brace sinks clueless Man United at Old Trafford

Manchester United’s struggles continued as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

The loss marked United’s seventh defeat in 13 league games at home this season, a dismal record that has raised concerns among fans and pundits alike.

The match saw Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta score a brace, with his first goal coming in the 64th minute.

The Frenchman’s strike was set up by substitute Eberechi Eze, who made an instant impact after coming on.

Eze’s free-kick found Maxence Lacroix, who headed the ball against the crossbar, and Mateta was on hand to tap in the rebound.

United’s defense was caught napping again in the 88th minute, as Mateta scored his second goal.

Ismaila Sarr played a perfectly weighted pass through the United defense, finding Daniel Munoz, who squared the ball for Mateta to sweep in.

The defeat undermines United’s struggles in front of goal. Despite dominating possession, they were unable to create clear-cut chances, and their lack of a clinical striker was evident.

Manager Ruben Amorim’s decision to start without a recognized striker backfired, as Kobbie Mainoo, playing as a “false nine,” failed to make an impact.

Palace, on the other hand, looked dangerous on the counter-attack, with Mateta and Sarr causing problems for the United defense.

The visitors could have taken the lead earlier, with Mateta and Munoz both missing gilt-edged chances in the first half.

The defeat leaves United in a precarious position, with their top-four hopes taking a significant hit.

Amorim’s side will need to regroup quickly, with a crucial Europa League tie against Barcelona looming on the horizon.

Palace’s victory marked their fourth win at Old Trafford in their last six visits.

The Eagles’ manager, Roy Hodgson, will be delighted with his side’s performance, which showcased their resilience and clinical finishing.

As for United, the search for a reliable striker continues. With Marcus Rashford on his way out, on loan to Aston Villa, Amorim will need to find a solution to his side’s attacking woes if they are to salvage their season.
