Mikel Arteta has openly admitted that Arsenal FC should already have secured more major honours following several seasons of remarkable consistency, as the North London side continues its ambitious pursuit of both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles.

The Arsenal manager made the comments while reflecting on the progress the club has achieved since his arrival in December 2019. Although Arteta has successfully transformed Arsenal into one of the strongest and most competitive teams in Europe, the Spanish coach acknowledged that the level of performances produced by his squad over recent years deserved more silverware.

Arteta explained that Arsenal’s steady rise back to the top of English football has created naturally high expectations among supporters and within the club itself. According to the manager, the team’s development has been impressive, but the ultimate measure of success at a club of Arsenal’s stature remains the ability to consistently win major trophies.

When Arteta took charge nearly seven years ago, Arsenal were facing one of the most difficult periods in their modern history. The club had lost its competitive identity following the departure of legendary former manager Arsène Wenger and struggled to qualify regularly for the UEFA Champions League.

The squad lacked balance, confidence and consistency, while several expensive signings failed to produce the expected impact. Arteta inherited a team in transition and immediately focused on rebuilding the culture, discipline and tactical structure of the club.

Despite early challenges, the former Arsenal captain quickly delivered silverware by guiding the club to FA Cup success during his first season in charge. That victory provided supporters with optimism and strengthened belief in the club’s long term rebuilding process.

Over the following seasons, Arsenal gradually evolved into genuine title contenders. The club invested heavily in young and talented players capable of forming the foundation of a long term project. Key figures including Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, William Saliba and Declan Rice emerged as central leaders within Arteta’s system.

Arsenal’s return to the top level of English football has been particularly evident in recent Premier League campaigns. The club pushed Manchester City closely in consecutive title races, spending extended periods at the top of the table before narrowly missing out on the championship.

Those near misses created disappointment among Arsenal supporters, especially because the team demonstrated the quality required to compete with Pep Guardiola’s dominant Manchester City side. However, Arteta believes those painful experiences have helped strengthen the mentality and maturity of his squad.

The manager stressed that Arsenal are no longer satisfied with simply competing for honours. Instead, the club’s objective is now firmly focused on becoming serial winners capable of maintaining success domestically and in Europe over a long period.

This season has further increased expectations around Arsenal after the club continued to challenge strongly in both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League. Strong performances against elite European opposition have convinced many football analysts that Arsenal now possess the tactical discipline, squad depth and confidence needed to compete for the biggest trophies.

Arteta’s tactical approach has received widespread praise from football experts across Europe. Arsenal have developed into one of the continent’s most organized teams defensively while also maintaining an aggressive attacking style built around pressing, quick transitions and technical midfield dominance.

Much of Arsenal’s progress has been driven by the maturity of their young core. Bukayo Saka has evolved into one of Europe’s most influential attackers, consistently delivering goals and assists at the highest level. Captain Martin Ødegaard has become the creative heartbeat of the team, while William Saliba’s defensive leadership has significantly improved Arsenal’s stability at the back.

The arrival of Declan Rice also added greater balance and authority in midfield, with the England international quickly becoming one of the team’s most important players since his high profile move from West Ham United.

Arteta also acknowledged the enormous challenge of competing in an era where clubs such as Manchester City possess exceptional financial power and squad depth. Nevertheless, the Arsenal manager insisted that his players remain fully focused on achieving sustained success rather than using excuses for previous disappointments.

Supporters have largely responded positively to Arteta’s honesty regarding the club’s trophy ambitions. Many fans believe Arsenal are now closer than ever to ending their long wait for another Premier League title, with the club’s last league triumph coming during the historic “Invincibles” campaign in 2004.

The UEFA Champions League also represents a major opportunity for Arsenal to create history, as the club has never previously won Europe’s biggest club competition despite reaching the final in 2006.

As the season enters its decisive stages, pressure continues to grow around Arsenal’s pursuit of silverware. However, Arteta remains convinced that the lessons learned from previous setbacks could ultimately help his side achieve the success many believe this talented generation of players deserves.
