Nasarawa riot arrest breastfeeding women

Community Initiative for Character Molding and Entrepreneurship Development, CICMED, director, Mr. Kefas Tiga, on Monday, came down hard on the police and the state governor, Abdullahi Sule, over reported arrest of 38 women who protested against the Supreme Court verdict, last week, calling such action inhuman.

According to CICMED, some of the women arrested are still breastfeeding their babies.

Mr. Tiga spoke to newsmen in Lafia after hearing application on their behalf was stalled over standing order stopping the movement of inmates from one place to another in the state.

The CICMED boss described the arrests as unfortunate, adding that these women who were arrested were never reported as violent during their protest since 19th March 2023.

“Among these women inside the prison are some even carrying children.

“It has never been reported but some of these women in the prison have children that they are still breastfeeding and some are sick, this is no longer human,” Tiga said.

He called on civil society organizations in the country to wake up to development in the state.

Also speaking, counsel to defendants Barrister Ayiwulo Baba Ayiwulo, said the court fixed Monday 22th January 2024 for the hearing of the case but a later order that the application should be filled formally for the determination of date of those who were remanded in the correctional facility stalled matters.

He added that the court fixed Thursday 25th January 2024 for the hearing of the application.
