NDDC launches LIFE-ND Project to boost agro-business in Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Imo
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has launched the Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprises – Niger Delta (LIFE-ND) project, a comprehensive initiative designed to transform the agribusiness sector in the region.
The project, funded by NDDC and supported by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, as well as the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), aims to empower youth, women, and communities in Akwa Ibom, Imo, and Rivers States.
Speaking at the launch in Port Harcourt, NDDC Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, emphasized the project’s potential to address pressing issues in the region, including unemployment, youth restlessness, and social exclusion.
“The LIFE-ND project is a beacon of hope for our people,” Dr. Ogbuku said. “We are committed to creating opportunities for economic growth, skill development, and improved livelihoods for our beneficiaries.”
The LIFE-ND project is designed to achieve several key objectives, including: improving agricultural productivity and profitability, enhancing access to markets and financial services, building capacity and skills among beneficiaries, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and fostering inclusive growth and social cohesion
The project will directly benefit 38,000 individuals, with multiplier effects expected to impact many more across the Niger Delta region.
Beneficiaries will receive training, mentorship, and support to establish and grow their agribusiness ventures, with a focus on value chains such as cassava, oil palm, and fisheries.
As the project rolls out, communities in Akwa Ibom, Imo, and Rivers States can expect to see increased opportunities for economic growth, skill development, and improved livelihoods.
In his remarks, Dr. Ogbuku thanked the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, IFAD, and other partners for their support, saying, “We are proud to work with esteemed partners who share our vision for a prosperous Niger Delta.”
About NDDC:
The Commission was established in 2000 to address the decades-long neglect and underdevelopment of the Niger Delta region in Nigeria.
The region, rich in oil and gas resources, has suffered from environmental degradation, poverty, and social unrest.
Despite its natural wealth, the Niger Delta faces significant development challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, poor healthcare and education, and high levels of unemployment.
The NDDC’s mandate is to facilitate rapid development in the region, addressing environmental, social, and economic challenges.
The commission implements projects and programs in infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and economic empowerment, collaborating with state and local governments, and other stakeholders.
By doing so, the NDDC aims to promote peace and stability in the region, improving the lives of the over 30 million people who call the Niger Delta home.
