LAGOS, Nigeria — The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Monday opened its case against Ukatu Afamefuna Mallinson, a businessman, and two individuals over the alleged possession and trafficking of 322 kilogrammes of tramadol, a controlled substance.

The trial commenced before Justice Yellim Bogoro of the Federal High Court in Lagos, following the reassignment of the matter after the transfer of Peter Lifu, the former trial judge, to the court’s Abuja division. The case had been pending before Justice Lifu before his transfer to the nation’s capital.

The NDLEA, represented by its prosecuting counsel, called its first witness to testify in the trial, presenting evidence and documents in support of its case against the defendants. The agency alleges that the defendants were found in possession of the prohibited substance, which is classified as a controlled drug under Nigerian law.

The defendants, including Mallinson and two others, were arraigned on charges bordering on unlawful possession and trafficking of tramadol, a synthetic opioid that is commonly abused and has been linked to various health and social issues. The NDLEA has intensified its efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse, with a particular focus on tramadol, which has become a drug of concern in Nigeria.

The trial is expected to continue with the cross-examination of witnesses and the presentation of additional evidence by both the prosecution and the defence. Justice Bogoro has adjourned the case to a later date to allow for further proceedings.

The Federal High Court in Lagos has jurisdiction over drug-related offences, including trafficking and possession of controlled substances. The reassignment of the case to Justice Bogoro followed the transfer of Justice Lifu to the Abuja division of the court, a routine administrative procedure that ensures the continuity of judicial proceedings.

The NDLEA has been at the forefront of the fight against drug trafficking in Nigeria, with a mandate to enforce laws against the production, possession, and distribution of illicit substances. The agency has also been involved in public awareness campaigns to educate the public on the dangers of drug abuse.
