The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly condemned the recent resurgence of xenophobic tensions in South Africa, expressing deep concern over reports of harassment, intimidation, and violent treatment of foreign nationals, particularly Nigerians residing in the country. The government warned that it would no longer tolerate situations where its citizens are subjected to humiliation and insecurity in any foreign nation.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, conveyed Nigeria’s position following escalating reports of anti-immigrant demonstrations and isolated attacks in parts of South Africa. The developments, which have sparked renewed diplomatic unease between both countries, were described by Nigeria as unacceptable and capable of undermining long standing bilateral relations.
According to the ministry, Nigeria has received disturbing reports from its diplomatic missions in South Africa regarding rising hostility toward foreigners in certain communities. These include allegations of intimidation, forced business closures, and discriminatory rhetoric targeting African migrants. Nigerians living in affected areas were also advised in some instances to remain indoors for safety while security agencies attempted to restore calm.
Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu held discussions with South Africa’s Minister of International Relations, Ronald Lamola, to formally communicate Nigeria’s concerns and demand urgent intervention. During the engagement, Nigeria stressed the need for immediate and decisive action to protect the lives and property of its citizens, as well as other foreign nationals who may be affected by the unrest.
The Federal Government emphasized that the safety and dignity of Nigerians abroad remain a top priority, noting that any failure to guarantee such protection would compel Nigeria to take appropriate diplomatic measures. The minister further reiterated that the government is closely monitoring the situation through its embassy and consular officials in South Africa.
Nigeria also expressed particular concern about reports involving children of mixed Nigerian and South African heritage, who are said to have been subjected to discrimination in some schools and communities. The government described such developments as deeply troubling and inconsistent with international human rights standards, urging South African authorities to ensure that vulnerable groups are not targeted in any form.
While acknowledging that security agencies in South Africa have reportedly intervened in some areas to contain protests, Nigeria maintained that the broader pattern of hostility toward migrants remains a serious issue that requires sustained attention. The Federal Government called for stronger enforcement of laws that protect foreigners and prevent acts of mob violence or discrimination.
The Nigerian government further warned that continued xenophobic incidents could strain diplomatic relations between both countries. It noted that Nigeria and South Africa share significant economic, political, and cultural ties that must be preserved through mutual respect and cooperation. Any actions that endanger citizens of either country, it said, risk undermining decades of diplomatic engagement and regional solidarity.
Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu also highlighted the importance of dialogue and peaceful resolution of grievances within South African society, urging leaders, community influencers, and civil society organizations to discourage hate speech and misinformation that often fuel xenophobic sentiments.
In response to Nigeria’s concerns, South African authorities reportedly assured that measures are being taken to address the situation. They reaffirmed their commitment to protecting all residents within their borders, regardless of nationality, and pledged to investigate any reported cases of violence or discrimination.
Nigeria welcomed these assurances but insisted that concrete actions must follow, including the prosecution of individuals found guilty of inciting or engaging in violence against foreign nationals. The government also called for improved early warning systems and stronger community engagement to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.
Meanwhile, Nigerian diplomatic missions in South Africa have been instructed to maintain close contact with affected citizens and provide necessary consular assistance. Discussions are also ongoing regarding possible evacuation support for those who may wish to return home voluntarily, depending on how the situation develops.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigerians wherever they are in the world, stating that it would continue to engage diplomatically with South Africa until the safety of its citizens is fully guaranteed. It also urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm, avoid confrontation, and adhere strictly to safety advisories issued by local authorities and the Nigerian High Commission.
