Nigeria expands visa-free travel access to 17 African countries in 2025

The Africa Visa Openness Index (AVOI) has released its latest report on visa travel policies across African nations.
According to Diaspora digital media (DDM) the report highlights countries that Nigerian passport holders can visit without a visa and those that offer visas on arrival.
Seventeen African countries now allow Nigerians to enter without requiring a visa, making travel within the continent easier.
These countries include Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau.
Others are Liberia, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Togo.
Additionally, thirty-six African nations grant visas on arrival to Nigerian travelers, simplifying international movement.
The countries that provide visas on arrival include Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Burundi, the Central African Republic, Comoros, Djibouti, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Others are Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, Kenya, Lesotho, and Libya.
More nations that offer visas on arrival include Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, and the Republic of the Congo.
Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe also grant Nigerian travelers visas on arrival.
Benin, The Gambia, Rwanda, and Seychelles now offer visa-free access to all Africans, promoting regional integration.
Visa-free travel within Africa has increased significantly from 20% in 2016 to 28% in 2024, reflecting progress.
More African countries are relaxing their visa requirements to facilitate trade, tourism, and business interactions among citizens.
E-visas have also become more widespread, with 26 African countries now offering digital visa applications to simplify the process.
This marks significant progress compared to just nine African countries offering e-visas in 2016.
Since 2016, thirty-nine African nations have improved their visa openness scores, showing greater flexibility in their policies.
Benin, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and The Gambia are among the most improved nations in Africa.
