Nigeria’s economic crisis threatens Tinubu’s reelection bid

Primate Elijah Ayodele has warned President Bola Tinubu about Nigeria’s worsening economic crisis and its impact on his reelection chances.

In a statement on March 18, 2025, Ayodele emphasized the urgent need to address the country’s growing economic challenges before it worsens.

According to Diaspora digital media (DDM) he noted that the rising cost of living has made basic necessities unaffordable for many Nigerians, leading to severe financial distress.

Ayodele highlighted that even during fasting periods, some Nigerians struggle to break their fast with ₦1,000 due to skyrocketing prices.

He strongly criticized government policies, including electricity tariff hikes and additional taxes, for worsening the financial burden on struggling citizens.

The cleric accused the Tinubu administration of being disconnected from the harsh economic realities that millions of Nigerians face daily.

He recalled that in November 2024, he had predicted that the 2025 budget would be insufficient and lead to further borrowing.

Ayodele warned that if the economic downturn continues unchecked, it could result in widespread protests and possible civil unrest.

He also criticized certain government poverty alleviation initiatives, particularly the rice palliative program, for fostering corruption and mismanagement.

According to him, such programs fail to address the root causes of economic hardship and only serve as temporary relief.

Ayodele projected alarming price increases in essential goods if corrective actions are not implemented urgently.

He predicted that a single tuber of yam could soon cost ₦5,000, a derica of rice ₦5,000, and sachet water ₦200.

He cautioned that such inflation could push frustrated citizens, particularly women, into mass protests against the government.

Ayodele stressed that the administration must prioritize economic policies that reduce living costs and ease financial strain on Nigerians.

He warned that ignoring these concerns could not only harm Tinubu’s political future but also deepen Nigeria’s economic instability.

Ayodele called on those close to the president to advise him on the seriousness of the country’s economic situation.

He emphasized that immediate and effective policy interventions are necessary to restore public confidence and economic stability.

According to him, only bold and well-planned economic reforms can prevent Nigeria from descending into further hardship and chaos.

Ayodele’s warning underscores the need for policies that genuinely improve Nigerians’ standard of living rather than offering short-term solutions.

He urged the government to focus on long-term economic strategies that promote growth and sustainable development.

The cleric insisted that failure to act decisively would increase public frustration and political instability in the country.

He noted that many Nigerians have lost faith in government efforts to improve their economic situation.

Ayodele warned that continued inaction could trigger a crisis that threatens national unity and security.

He reiterated that the cost of essential commodities must be controlled to prevent further hardship for citizens.

The cleric also expressed concerns about the impact of inflation on businesses, particularly small and medium enterprises.

He stressed that without proper intervention, many businesses could collapse, worsening unemployment and poverty.

Ayodele urged the administration to reconsider its economic policies and prioritize measures that directly benefit the people.

He argued that the government must find sustainable solutions rather than imposing higher taxes and tariffs.

According to him, policies that burden citizens financially will only lead to more hardship and resentment.

Ayodele’s message serves as a critical reminder of the importance of responsible governance and economic planning.

The coming months will determine whether Tinubu’s administration takes the necessary steps to address these concerns.

As Nigerians continue to struggle with economic difficulties, all eyes remain on the government’s next move.
