NiMet: United Nigeria Airline safety promise raises eyebrows amid strike

United Nigeria Airlines has assured passengers of safe operations amid the ongoing strike by Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) workers.
The airline declared that all flights remain fully compliant with aviation safety standards despite the industrial action by NiMet staff.
In a statement issued on Thursday April 24, 2025, in Lagos, airline spokesperson Mr. Chibuike Uloka reaffirmed the company’s commitment to passenger safety.
He noted that the airline uses multiple alternative weather data sources approved by global aviation regulators and industry experts.
Uloka explained that while NiMet plays a vital role, the airline remains operational through reliable international meteorological systems.
He stated that flight dispatch teams access real-time satellite imagery and global aviation weather systems for accurate route planning.
“We also receive in-flight weather updates from pilots and maintain close coordination with air traffic control authorities,” he said.
The airline confirmed that all planning and dispatch teams work around the clock to monitor safety and comfort for travelers.
Uloka emphasized that strict safety protocols are in place, and passenger convenience remains a top operational priority.
“We remain fully compliant with regulatory requirements and committed to upholding the highest standards in Nigerian aviation,” he stated.
United Nigeria Airlines urged the government and NiMet union to reach a peaceful resolution without further delay.
The airline joined stakeholders in calling for swift dialogue to end the strike and restore meteorological services nationwide.
Recall that Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reported that staff of NiMET embarked on an indefinite strike on April 22
The strike could disrupt aviation services due to NiMet’s critical role in providing weather forecasts and flight route information.
Despite the tension, United Nigeria Airlines said its safety assurance framework remains strong and thoroughly tested for emergencies.
Uloka said, “We have invested in robust technology and global partnerships to ensure uninterrupted flight planning and safety compliance.”
Passengers have been urged to proceed with their travel plans, as all scheduled flights remain active and monitored.
Airlines across Nigeria continue to review safety procedures in response to NiMet’s industrial action and possible operational gaps.
Aviation experts warned that prolonged strikes could raise risks and affect international confidence in Nigeria’s flight safety protocols.
However, they acknowledged that airlines with global-standard systems can mitigate short-term disruptions and maintain secure operations.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has not announced any nationwide disruption linked directly to the NiMet strike.
United Nigeria Airlines said it would continue updating passengers with accurate travel information as the situation evolves.
