NLC Demands Protection For Migrants Amid Xenophobic Attacks In South Africa

ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Nigeria Labour Congress has called on the South African government to immediately strengthen protection for migrant workers and foreign nationals following renewed xenophobic attacks in parts of the country.

The labour union condemned the violence and intimidation reportedly targeting African migrants, including Nigerians, describing the situation as unacceptable and dangerous to regional unity.

In a statement issued by labour leaders, the NLC expressed concern over growing hostility against foreign workers and business owners amid rising social and economic tensions in South Africa.

The union warned that continued attacks on migrants could damage diplomatic relations between African countries and undermine continental cooperation.

According to the NLC, many Nigerians and other African nationals living in South Africa contribute positively to the economy and should not be subjected to violence, discrimination, or intimidation.

The organisation urged South African authorities to act decisively against individuals and groups responsible for the attacks while ensuring adequate security for vulnerable communities.

Labour leaders also called on the African Union and regional bodies to intervene and promote stronger protections for migrant workers across the continent.

The NLC argued that African nations must reject xenophobia and instead strengthen solidarity, economic cooperation, and mutual respect among citizens of member states.

The union further warned that failure to address recurring attacks could provoke wider diplomatic and social consequences.

Reports of violence and threats against migrants in South Africa have triggered fear among many Nigerians residing in affected communities.

Some migrants have reportedly abandoned businesses or relocated temporarily due to safety concerns.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has already activated emergency response measures through its diplomatic missions in South Africa to support affected citizens.

Officials say evacuation arrangements are also being considered for Nigerians willing to return home amid escalating tensions.

The NLC stressed that migrant workers should not become scapegoats for economic hardship or unemployment challenges within host countries.

Labour analysts note that xenophobic violence in South Africa has repeatedly emerged during periods of economic pressure, high unemployment, and social frustration.

Human rights groups have similarly condemned the attacks and called for accountability for perpetrators involved in violence against foreigners.

The labour union also hinted at the possibility of organised mass action and solidarity protests if attacks on Nigerians and other African migrants continue unchecked.

Political observers say the situation is becoming a growing diplomatic concern for several African governments with citizens residing in South Africa.

The NLC reiterated its commitment to defending the rights, dignity, and safety of Nigerian workers both within and outside the country.

Attention now shifts to the response of South African authorities and whether stronger security measures will be introduced to prevent further xenophobic violence.
