Okpebholo denies paying N6bn to terrorists, blasts IPOB

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State on Thursday April 24, 2025, denied authorising any payment of N6 billion to terrorist groups or individuals linked to violence.
The governor made the clarification in a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, in Benin City on Thursday.
He reacted to a publication by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a proscribed terrorist group, which accused him of allocating N6 billion as compensation to terrorists.
IPOB also claimed the governor betrayed the people of Edo by making secret deals with violent groups.
Governor Okpebholo dismissed the allegations as fictitious, malicious, and a calculated attempt to tarnish his administration’s image and incite ethnic tension.
He described the accusations as inciteful and reckless, accusing IPOB of spreading deliberate misinformation to cause unrest and division in the state.
The governor stated that IPOB had consistently thrived on propaganda and falsehood disguised as ethnic advocacy.
He insisted that his administration never supported or compensated individuals or groups involved in terrorism or criminal activities.
Okpebholo reaffirmed his government’s commitment to peace, justice, and the rule of law.
He stressed that his administration prioritised the security of all Edo residents, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or political leaning.
He condemned IPOB’s claim that vigilantes were handed over to Fulani authorities.
Okpebholo also described the allegation as absurd and disrespectful to the sacrifices of security operatives.
“This claim is not only false but an insult to the gallant men and women who risk their lives daily to keep Edo safe,” Okpebholo said.
He added that IPOB’s attempt to associate his government with violence had failed, as Edo people had outrightly rejected the group’s dangerous rhetoric.
“IPOB’s latest propaganda is criminal and has no place in Edo’s peaceful society,” he said.
He noted that Edo citizens are known for peace, unity, and hospitality, and would not allow any group to disrupt their harmony.
Okpebholo criticised IPOB for enforcing illegal sit-at-home orders, promoting violence, and pretending to speak for justice.
“A group that thrives on fear and lawlessness cannot pretend to fight for human rights,” he said.
He urged security agencies to investigate the origin of the false publication and bring the perpetrators to justice.
He warned that no group should be allowed to manipulate facts for violent political agendas or ethnic conflict.
The governor assured Edo residents of his unwavering focus on inclusive development, public safety, and continued peace across the state.
