PDP NEC Disapproves Appointment of Wike’s Lawyer as Legal Adviser
DDM News

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the appointment of Dr. J.Y. Musa as the party’s legal representative at the Appeal and Supreme Courts.
Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that a petition signed by 11 out of 17 members of the NEC was submitted, calling for the dismissal of the appointment.
In the petition, dated January 21, 2025, and received by the registries of both the Appeal and Supreme Courts, the dissenting NEC members demanded that the courts disregard Dr. Musa’s appointment.
They argued that the appointment was unauthorized, breaching the PDP’s constitution.
Specifically, they pointed to Article 42, which grants the National Legal Adviser the sole authority to appoint external legal counsel, not the National Chairman.
This dispute is linked to the ongoing legal battle involving Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu, who was removed from his position as PDP National Secretary by a court decision.
The Enugu High Court’s ruling was later upheld by the Court of Appeal on December 20, 2024.
Anyanwu has since appealed the decision to the Supreme Court, refusing to vacate the office.
The NEC members believe Dr. Musa’s appointment is a conflict of interest, as he is allegedly a close ally of Minister Nyesom Wike, which they argue undermines the party’s integrity.
The Acting National Chairman, Amb. Iliya Damagum, had previously instructed Dr. Musa to represent the PDP in the Supreme Court appeal.
However, the NEC’s rejection stems from concerns over the authority of the appointment and the potential for bias due to Musa’s ties with Wike.
The NEC believes that such an appointment could be damaging to the party’s credibility, especially amidst the ongoing leadership disputes.
This development highlights the ongoing tension within the PDP, as the NEC continues to challenge decisions made by the National Chairman.
The rejection of Dr. Musa’s nomination underscores the division within the party, with members questioning the decision-making processes at the top level of the party’s leadership.
The situation remains fluid as the PDP prepares for the SupremeCourt’s ruling on the matter.
