Peter Obi Confirms 2027 Presidential Bid, Dismisses Atiku VP Rumours

Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Peter Obi, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that Obi made this clear during an interview with Channels Television, where he firmly dismissed widespread rumours suggesting he had entered talks to become the running mate of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Obi insisted there had been no such discussions, emphasizing that he remains fully committed to the Labour Party (LP).

He described the ongoing alliance with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a coalition for national development, not a sign of defection from his party.

“This is not in play,” Obi said, referring to the speculation.

“Nobody has ever discussed that with me. People assume too many things.”

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, who finished third in the polls, stated confidently:

“I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it.”

His declaration comes on the heels of a major political development last week, when several prominent opposition figures adopted the ADC as a united platform to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

The coalition includes notable political leaders such as Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola, former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung, former APC National Chairman Odigie Oyegun, and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal. Obi remains one of the most visible and influential figures in the coalition.

Defending his involvement, Obi said he values the collective experience of seasoned political leaders, noting that their shared knowledge, both from success and failure, will be vital in steering Nigeria toward meaningful reform.

He also restated his belief that he only needs four years in office to deliver transformational governance, if given the opportunity.

Obi’s reaffirmed ambition sets the stage for a potentially dramatic faceoff in 2027, as opposition forces prepare to challenge the APC and President Tinubu’s hold on power.

Analysts suggest that Obi’s grassroots popularity, reputation for fiscal discipline, and anti-establishment posture could position him as a major contender.

However, his ambition may also fuel internal friction within the opposition bloc, particularly with Atiku Abubakar’s loyalists.

As Nigeria inches closer to 2027, the political landscape is beginning to shift, and Peter Obi has once again positioned himself at the center of the country’s most defining political contest.
