ABEOKUTA, Nigeria — Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday, as political consultations ahead of the 2027 general election continue to intensify.
Photos from the meeting were shared on social media by Obi’s campaign photographer, Esther Umoh, showing the two political figures together during the visit. Obi was dressed in a blue traditional outfit, while Obasanjo wore a white native attire with a blue patterned cap. A Catholic bishop was also seen with the two leaders during parts of the meeting.
Neither Obi nor Obasanjo disclosed the purpose of the meeting, and no official statement was issued after the visit. The lack of details has fueled speculation about the significance of the discussions, particularly as political parties and leading figures continue consultations ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The meeting comes amid renewed public debate over Obasanjo’s political alignment ahead of the next election cycle. In recent weeks, some groups have claimed the former president may be quietly supporting President Bola Tinubu’s expected re-election bid. However, those claims have been strongly disputed by some of Obasanjo’s former associates.
Akin Osuntokun, who previously served as Obasanjo’s political adviser, recently rejected suggestions that the former president was backing Tinubu. Instead, he said Obasanjo played a key role in facilitating discussions that led to the formation of an opposition alliance involving Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, who is expected to serve as Obi’s running mate. Osuntokun maintained that Obasanjo remains actively engaged in efforts to unite opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 polls.
Wednesday’s meeting is expected to add further momentum to political discussions as parties continue to build alliances and refine their strategies before the official campaign season begins.
