At least two suspected bandits have been killed and five kidnapped residents rescued during a major security operation in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

FCT Police Commissioner, Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, disclosed the development on Wednesday, saying he personally led the operation that targeted a gang linked to recent attacks in Bwari Area Council.

The operation followed last week’s abduction of five residents from Paze Community in the Byazhin Ward of Bwari. Among those kidnapped was a pastor, while a local vigilante member, identified as Shuaibu Yerima, was shot dead during the attack.

According to the police commissioner, the rescue mission involved operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Nigeria Police Force Intelligence Response Team (IRT), and the Kubwa Area Command. Local hunters and vigilante groups also participated in the operation.

Sanusi said the joint security team launched an intensive search-and-rescue mission around 9 p.m. on Tuesday across Paze and neighbouring Byazhin communities.

The operation led to a fierce confrontation with the criminal gang. Two suspected bandits were killed, while two others identified as Icheh Mohammadu and Abubakar Usman were arrested. Several gang members reportedly escaped into nearby hills and forests.

Security operatives also recovered two AK-47 rifles and loaded magazines during the raid.

The five rescued victims have been taken to hospital for medical evaluation and treatment, while arrangements are being made to reunite them with their families.

The police commissioner said security forces have continued search operations across surrounding communities to track down the fleeing suspects and dismantle the remaining network.

He also appealed to hospitals, clinics, and members of the public to immediately report anyone seeking treatment for gunshot wounds or displaying suspicious injuries that may be connected to the operation.

Authorities say efforts are ongoing to ensure that all members of the criminal gang are brought to justice and to strengthen security across vulnerable communities in the FCT.
