The Nigeria Police Force has suspended one of its high-ranking officers, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police, Abduyari Shuaya’u Lafia, effective January 9, 2025.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that this decision follows controversies surrounding his conduct.

Allegations claim that he altered his service record to present a longer period of service with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

As a result, Lafia’s salary has been immediately stopped. This suspension is expected to have a significant impact on his career.

A communication from the Force Headquarters, dated January 9, 2025, was sent to all units, departments, and commands within the Nigeria Force.

The message, signed by the Force Secretary, announced Lafia’s suspension.

The letter, issued in line with the Police Service Commission (POLSCOM) provisions, stated that the decision was based on the commission’s letter dated the same day.

The police authorities directed Lafia to strictly follow the rules and regulations for officers under suspension.

This shows the seriousness with which the  Force is handling the matter.

The letter referenced Police Service Rules (PSR) 100406, 2021, as amended, which governs the conduct of officers.

Lafia’s suspension will remain in place while a full investigation is carried out by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC).

The committee will decide if further disciplinary action is needed based on Lafia’s alleged manipulation of his service history. This controversy has already tarnished his professional reputation.

Additionally, the police authorities have ordered the suspension of Lafia’s salary payments. The Nigeria Police Force Budget and Payment departments have been instructed to stop all salary payments for him.

This procedure follows standard practice for police officers placed on suspension, in accordance with the regulations set by the Police Service Commission.

Lafia’s suspension follows increased scrutiny of his conduct since he assumed office as the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Intelligence Bureau at the Force Headquarters in Abuja in February 2023.

His tenure has been marked by controversy, and during this time, allegations surfaced about the manipulation of his service record.

It is alleged that Lafia falsified details about his years of service. The aim was likely to gain credibility and an advantage within the police ranks.

The suspension comes at a time when the Nigeria Police Force faces heightened public scrutiny, amid several high-profile cases and allegations against its officers.

In Lafia’s case, the police authorities are exercising caution in handling the matter. They are ensuring that due process is followed while maintaining the integrity of the Force.

The Force Disciplinary Committee will review the case to determine if Lafia should face additional disciplinary measures or be reinstated after the suspension.

This action by the Nigeria Force highlights its commitment to maintaining professionalism and discipline among its officers.

It sends a strong message to other officers about the consequences of unethical conduct and the importance of following the rules and regulations.

The investigation’s outcome will likely influence public perception of the Nigeria Police Force, which has been working to restore its image and regain public trust after years of controversies and concerns over accountability.

The Nigeria Police Force continues to face challenges in managing its officers, particularly in light of internal corruption and misconduct.

Lafia’s suspension is one example of the Force’s efforts to hold officers accountable. However, the process is still under close observation.

As the Force Disciplinary Committee’s investigation progresses, more details about Lafia’s actions and the effects of his suspension will likely emerge.

This will be closely monitored by both the public and members of the Police Force.

With the suspension now officially in place, the Nigeria Police Force will continue to closely monitor the case.

Lafia’s future within the Force remains uncertain until the disciplinary committee reaches a decision.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency, accountability, and integrity within the law enforcement community.
