ABUJA, Nigeria — The House of Representatives has initiated efforts to revive the abandoned 330kV Ikot Ekpene–Ikot Abasi Transmission Line Project in Akwa Ibom State as part of measures to strengthen electricity infrastructure and improve power supply in the South-South region.
The House Committee on Power made the commitment during an oversight visit to the project, describing the transmission line as a strategic national asset that is critical to expanding electricity transmission capacity and supporting industrial growth. Lawmakers expressed concern over the prolonged abandonment of the project, noting that its completion would significantly improve power distribution and reduce transmission bottlenecks in Akwa Ibom and neighbouring states.
Committee members said the National Assembly would work closely with relevant government agencies, including the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), to identify the factors responsible for the delay and ensure that construction resumes. They stressed that reviving abandoned infrastructure projects remains a priority, especially those capable of boosting economic development and improving the quality of life for Nigerians.
The lawmakers also emphasized that the transmission project would enhance the evacuation of electricity generated from power plants in the region, strengthen the national grid, and support businesses that rely on stable electricity for production. They added that improved power infrastructure would attract investment, create employment opportunities, and stimulate economic activities across the state.
Officials involved in the inspection acknowledged that inadequate funding, contractual challenges, and other administrative issues contributed to the project’s suspension. However, they expressed optimism that renewed legislative intervention would accelerate efforts to resolve outstanding issues and return contractors to the site.
Stakeholders welcomed the House of Representatives’ intervention, describing it as a positive step toward addressing the region’s electricity challenges. They urged all relevant authorities to ensure that the project is completed within a reasonable timeframe to deliver its intended economic and social benefits.
The renewed push to revive the Ikot Ekpene–Ikot Abasi 330kV Transmission Line Project aligns with the Federal Government’s broader objective of strengthening Nigeria’s electricity transmission network, expanding access to reliable power, and supporting national economic growth through improved infrastructure.
