Rivers NDC governorship aspirant denies serving as Fubara’s placeholder

A Rivers State governorship aspirant under the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Blessing Fubara (Snr), has dismissed claims that he is contesting as a placeholder for Governor Siminalayi Fubara ahead of a possible defection to the party.

Speaking during an interview with Super FM 93.3 in Port Harcourt on Saturday, Fubara acknowledged his family ties with the governor but maintained that they hold different political beliefs and ambitions.

His comments followed speculation that his governorship bid was linked to Governor Fubara’s withdrawal from the Rivers State APC governorship primaries amid the prolonged political dispute involving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Rejecting the claims, Fubara said his political ambition predates the governor’s recent political developments and was driven by a long-standing desire to reshape the state’s political landscape.

“Rivers people know me very well. I have always been passionate about the development of the people, not just the state. This is the time for Rivers people to take back their state,” he said.

He explained that his decision to enter the 2027 governorship race followed extensive consultations with stakeholders and support from residents across political divides.

“When you talk about my entrance being linked to the governor’s political decisions, that is not correct. We are beginning a new conversation about the soul of Rivers State,” he stated.

Fubara confirmed his relationship with the governor but stressed that family ties do not translate into political alignment.

“Oh yes, I am Fubara. I am related to the governor, but we share different political ideologies, aspirations and visions for Rivers State,” he said.

The governorship hopeful described the NDC as a credible opposition platform capable of providing alternative leadership and governance in the state.

He said his political mission was focused on “rescuing and restoring” Rivers State, which he argued had suffered from personality-driven politics and recurring political crises.

According to him, politics in Rivers has increasingly become centred on loyalty and survival rather than strategy and development, a trend he believes has limited economic growth and opportunities for young people.

“For so long, our politics has been built around personalities instead of purpose. This is what has given birth to the political drama and challenges we see today in Rivers State,” he said.

Asked whether he had informed Governor Fubara about his ambition, the NDC aspirant declined to disclose details of his consultations, describing them as private and ongoing.

“With due respect to His Excellency, the Governor of Rivers State, that is not information for the public. Consultations are ongoing and progressing well,” he added.

Fubara urged Rivers residents to seize what he called a defining moment to reclaim the state and reposition it as a leading economic and political force in Nigeria.
