Nollywood actress and filmmaker Ruth Kadiri has voiced concern over Nigeria’s rising cost of living, highlighting the growing difficulty many households face in affording basic meals.
In a video shared on her social media platform, Kadiri expressed deep frustration over the sharp increase in food prices, describing the situation as emotionally draining. She noted that even individuals who are relatively stable financially are beginning to feel the weight of the country’s economic strain.
According to her, there is an alarming gap between what Nigerians earn and the current cost of essential commodities. She emphasized that a significant portion of people’s income is now spent on simple cooking ingredients, making daily living increasingly unsustainable.
Kadiri specifically pointed to the rising prices of tomatoes and pepper, stating that as much as ₦5,000 can now be spent on just those items—an amount she described as disproportionate, especially for individuals earning modest monthly salaries.
She further warned that prolonged financial hardship could trigger deeper social and psychological issues. The actress explained that economic pressure often breeds frustration, which can manifest as misplaced anger within families and communities.
Describing poverty as deeply damaging, Kadiri noted that it has the potential to erode emotional stability and affect how people relate with one another. She added that the situation is particularly heartbreaking for those who are struggling to find solutions to their daily needs.
Her remarks join a growing chorus of public figures raising concerns about Nigeria’s economic realities, as inflation and rising living costs continue to impact citizens across different income levels.
