Senate backs Reps’ in Kogi House of Assembly takeover

Senate on Thursday threw its weight behind the taking over of the legislative functions of the Kogi State House of Assembly by the House of Representatives.

The takeover followed the protracted crisis that engulfed the assembly in the last one month.

House of Representatives had on last week took over the State Assembly and directed inspector General of Police to seal the Kogi State House of Assembly.  

Senate agreed with the decision House of Representatives for the Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase to immediately seal off the Kogi assembly since the House has taken over its functions.

Before the Senate concurred with the report of House of Representatives on Kogi Assembly, Senator Dino Melaye who represents Kogi West made spirited efforts to scuttle the process of concurring with resolution of the House of Representatives.

His effort was, however, thwarted and he was quickly ruled out of order by presiding officer, Senator Bukola Saraki.

In the past one month, the Kogi assembly has been enveloped by “crisis of power.”

Five members of the assembly had reportedly removed Momoh Lawal, the speaker, and elected Umar Imam in his place.
