President of the Nigerian Senate, Chief Godswil Akpabio, has emphasized the need for more police recruitment exercises to address the country’s security challenges.

According to a statement issued by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Media and Publicity of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Akpabio made the call during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the PSC, led by Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu Rtd.

Akpabio acknowledged that the current policing situation in the country is inadequate, stressing the importance of proper screening to ensure only the best candidates are selected.

He assured the PSC that he would take up their concerns with President Tinubu and work towards finding a resolution.

DIG Argungu highlighted the challenges facing the PSC, including poor funding and the need for independent budgetary allocation.

He also made a case for establishing functional zonal offices to address geographical challenges in overseeing police officers across the country’s 747 local government areas and police stations.

The Senate President commended the PSC leadership and urged them to continue fulfilling their mandate. He also expressed appreciation for the close working relationship between the Commission and the National Assembly.

Present at the meeting were Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, Senators Osita Ngwu and Onyekachi Nwebonyi, Justice Adamu Paul Galumje, and Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission.
