Tambuwal Accuses APC of Plotting to Block Peter Obi from 2027 Presidential Race

A fresh political controversy has emerged in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape after former Sokoto State governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is allegedly working behind the scenes to prevent Peter Obi from contesting in the 2027 presidential election.

Tambuwal made the claim while addressing journalists in Sokoto shortly after his reported defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). His comments have since sparked widespread debate among political observers, party supporters, and analysts across the country.

According to Tambuwal, a political analysis conducted about two years ago by experts drawn from Nigeria’s major political parties allegedly revealed a strategic plan aimed at weakening opposition forces ahead of the next presidential election cycle. The former governor claimed the study involved political strategists and analysts associated with the PDP, APC, and the Labour Party, who examined possible political scenarios that could shape Nigeria’s political environment leading to the 2027 elections.

Speaking to reporters, Tambuwal suggested that one of the key conclusions from the analysis was that the APC would likely attempt to fragment or weaken opposition parties in order to reduce their competitiveness in future elections. He alleged that a central objective of the strategy was to ensure that Peter Obi does not contest the 2027 presidential election under a strong political platform.

DDM News gathered that Tambuwal’s comments have quickly attracted attention because of Peter Obi’s rising political influence in Nigeria following the 2023 presidential election. Obi, who contested under the Labour Party during the 2023 elections, emerged as one of the most prominent opposition figures in the country and continues to command significant support, particularly among young voters and urban populations.

Tambuwal further stated that the alleged strategy involved reducing the strength of opposition parties by turning them into minor political players ahead of the next election cycle. According to him, weakening rival political platforms could make it easier for the ruling party to maintain its hold on national power.

Political analysts say Tambuwal’s allegations highlight the growing tension within Nigeria’s opposition politics as parties reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential race. With several political figures already being mentioned as possible contenders, the political atmosphere is gradually becoming more competitive even though the election remains more than a year away.

The former Sokoto governor’s defection to the ADC has also added a new dimension to the conversation. His move is seen by some observers as part of broader realignments within Nigeria’s political landscape as various politicians explore new alliances and platforms ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Peter Obi himself had earlier joined the African Democratic Congress, a development that generated considerable interest among political observers. His association with the ADC has fueled speculation about potential coalition arrangements involving opposition parties seeking to challenge the dominance of the ruling APC in future elections.

DDM News understands that several prominent voices within Nigeria’s political space have been advocating for greater unity among opposition parties as a strategy to increase their chances in the next presidential election. Among those calling for such unity is Sunday Igboho, who has publicly urged Nigerians to support efforts aimed at preventing a second term for Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Another prominent figure, Dele Momodu, has also suggested that the opposition could secure victory in the next election if different political movements unite behind a single candidate capable of attracting nationwide support.

These calls for opposition unity have intensified discussions about the possibility of a coalition involving multiple parties, including the ADC, Labour Party, and other smaller political platforms. Supporters of such an alliance argue that combining political structures and voter bases could create a formidable challenge to the ruling party.

However, critics have cautioned that coalition politics in Nigeria can be complicated by ideological differences, leadership rivalries, and competing ambitions among political figures. Some analysts argue that the success of any coalition would depend largely on the ability of political leaders to compromise and present a united front to the electorate.

Tambuwal’s allegations have therefore added another layer of intrigue to an already complex political environment. While supporters of the opposition see his claims as evidence of the need for stronger political cooperation, members of the ruling party have yet to officially respond to the accusations.

The coming months are expected to witness increased political maneuvering as parties continue to prepare for future contests. Political observers believe that discussions around candidate eligibility, party alliances, and electoral strategies will become even more intense as the 2027 election draws closer.

For now, Tambuwal’s statement has reignited debate about the direction of Nigeria’s opposition politics and the potential role that Peter Obi could play in the country’s next presidential race.

As political alignments continue to evolve, many Nigerians will be watching closely to see whether the opposition can overcome internal divisions and present a united challenge in 2027, or whether the ruling party will maintain its advantage through strategic political positioning.
