Team Nigeria has earned widespread praise following a remarkable performance at the seventh edition of the Tour D’Afrique, a prestigious cycling expedition that combines sports, environmental advocacy, and regional integration across West Africa.
The successful participation of Nigerian cyclists in the demanding event has been celebrated as another significant step forward for the country’s growing cycling community. The achievement not only highlights the increasing popularity of the sport in Nigeria but also reinforces the nation’s commitment to promoting sustainable transportation and climate awareness through sporting initiatives.
Held under the theme “Riding Against Climate Change: A 1,110km Journey with Zero CO₂ Emissions,” the 2026 Tour D’Afrique brought together cyclists from different backgrounds and regions to champion environmental sustainability while undertaking one of the most challenging cycling journeys in West Africa.
The event, which ran from June 12 to June 19, attracted 50 cyclists from across Nigeria. Participants embarked on a physically demanding expedition that tested endurance, discipline, teamwork, and resilience. Throughout the journey, riders navigated varying terrains and weather conditions while promoting the message of cleaner transportation and reduced carbon emissions.
The cycling expedition formed part of activities marking World Bicycle Day and also coincided with celebrations of Nigeria’s Democracy Day and the 51st anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Organisers said the programme was designed to strengthen regional cooperation, encourage healthy living, and demonstrate the role of cycling in addressing environmental challenges.
Speaking after the successful completion of the tour, board member of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria, Femi Thomas, commended the cyclists for their dedication and determination throughout the event. He described the experience as both challenging and rewarding, noting that participants demonstrated exceptional commitment despite the rigours of the long-distance ride.
According to Thomas, every edition of the Tour D’Afrique offers unique opportunities for learning, networking, and personal development. He explained that the event enables cyclists to engage with fellow riders from different communities while sharing experiences that contribute to the growth of the sport across the continent.
He particularly praised first-time participants who successfully completed the expedition despite facing the physical and mental demands associated with long-distance cycling.
Their performance, he said, serves as evidence that Nigerian cyclists possess the talent, determination, and endurance required to compete effectively in major international cycling events.
The Tour D’Afrique has evolved into more than a sporting event. Over the years, it has become a platform for environmental advocacy, youth engagement, and regional collaboration. By promoting bicycle transportation as a sustainable alternative to motorised travel, the initiative seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while encouraging healthier lifestyles among citizens.
Environmental experts have consistently identified cycling as one of the most effective and affordable means of reducing urban pollution and traffic congestion. As cities across Africa continue to experience rapid population growth and increased transportation challenges, cycling is increasingly being recognised as a practical solution for sustainable mobility.
For Nigeria, participation in initiatives such as the Tour D’Afrique presents an opportunity to align sports development with broader environmental and economic goals. Stakeholders believe that increased investment in cycling infrastructure could deliver multiple benefits, including improved public health, reduced transportation costs, and enhanced environmental protection.
The successful outing by Team Nigeria also reflects the growing efforts of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria and other stakeholders to develop the sport at both grassroots and elite levels. In recent years, cycling competitions, awareness campaigns, and community rides have become more visible across the country, attracting a new generation of athletes and enthusiasts.
The 2026 expedition was coordinated by FT Cycle Care in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of Nigeria and the Velo NG Community. The partnership demonstrates the importance of cooperation between sports organisations, private sector stakeholders, and advocacy groups in advancing cycling development.
Observers believe the positive exposure generated by the event could inspire greater participation among Nigerian youths. With proper training facilities, sponsorship opportunities, and government support, experts argue that Nigeria has the potential to become a major force in African cycling.
Beyond the sporting achievements, the expedition also reinforced the message that climate action requires collective responsibility. By completing a 1,110-kilometre journey without carbon emissions, participants demonstrated how individual choices can contribute to environmental sustainability.
The accomplishment has been welcomed by cycling enthusiasts, environmental advocates, and sports administrators who view the event as a powerful example of how sports can be used to drive social change and public awareness.
As Team Nigeria returns home with renewed confidence and valuable experience, attention is now turning toward future competitions and opportunities to further expand the reach of cycling across the country. Many stakeholders hope the success recorded at the Tour D’Afrique will encourage increased investment in cycling programmes and inspire more Nigerians to embrace the sport.
For Team Nigeria, the expedition represents not just a completed journey but a statement of ambition, resilience, and commitment to a greener future. Their performance has once again shown that Nigerian athletes can excel on international platforms while promoting causes that benefit society as a whole.
