President Bola Tinubu has described the Hausa people as important pillars of Nigeria’s unity and progress as he joined celebrations marking Hausa Day.
Tinubu made the remarks on Wednesday, August 26, in a message shared on his official X handle as Hausa communities gathered at the historic Daura Palace in Katsina State.
The President said the Hausa language has grown beyond Nigeria to become an important language of communication, unity and commerce across Africa and other parts of the world.
“The Hausa people are great pillars that play a vital role in the unity and progress of Nigeria,” Tinubu said.
He added that the Hausa language “has flourished and has become a major language of unity and commerce across the world.”
Tinubu congratulated the Hausa community on the annual celebration and acknowledged the cultural significance of the occasion.
Hausa Day, also known as World Hausa Day or Ranar Hausa, is observed every August 26. The celebration began as a social media initiative by Nigerian journalist Abdulbaki Aliyu Jari to promote the Hausa language and highlight its cultural importance.
It has since expanded into celebrations in different parts of Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas.
Although the day has gained international attention, it is not formally recognised by the United Nations.
Hausa remains one of Nigeria’s major languages and is among the most widely spoken African languages.
