Trabzonspor have escalated the growing transfer battle surrounding Nigerian international Paul Onuachu by officially reporting Saudi Arabian club Al Ahli to FIFA over what they allege was an unauthorized approach for the Super Eagles striker.
The complaint marks a fresh twist in one of the biggest transfer stories involving a Nigerian footballer this summer and underlines Trabzonspor’s determination to retain one of their most influential players ahead of the new football season.
According to reports from Turkey, the former Turkish Cup winners believe Al Ahli made direct contact with Onuachu despite the player remaining under contract with Trabzonspor. The Turkish club argues that no formal permission was granted for such discussions and has now requested FIFA to examine the matter in line with international transfer regulations.
The development comes amid increasing interest from clubs in the Saudi Pro League, where teams continue to invest heavily in established players from Europe’s top competitions.
Under FIFA’s Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, clubs are generally prohibited from negotiating directly with a player who is under contract unless they first obtain authorization from the player’s current club, except in situations where the contract is approaching its final six months. Trabzonspor believe that process was not followed and have decided to seek FIFA’s intervention.
Neither FIFA nor Al Ahli had publicly commented on the complaint at the time of reporting, leaving uncertainty over how the governing body may respond if it decides to investigate the allegations.
The dispute has emerged only weeks after reports linked Al Ahli with a move for the Nigerian striker, who has rebuilt his reputation in Turkish football following a difficult spell in the English Premier League.
Trabzonspor are understood to have made it clear that Onuachu remains central to their plans for the upcoming season. Club officials reportedly value the experienced striker highly and are reluctant to sanction his departure unless an offer matching their valuation is submitted.
For the Turkish side, the timing of the transfer speculation is far from ideal. Preparations for the new campaign are already underway, and losing a proven goalscorer at this stage would leave a significant gap in the squad.
Onuachu has become one of the club’s most dependable attacking players since arriving in Turkey. His commanding physical presence, intelligent movement inside the penalty area and clinical finishing have transformed him into a fan favourite and one of the most feared strikers in the Turkish Super Lig.
Standing at 2.01 metres, the Nigerian forward is renowned for his aerial dominance, making him a constant threat during crosses, set pieces and long balls. However, his game extends beyond his height. Over the years, he has improved his link up play, movement off the ball and finishing with both feet, qualities that have allowed him to flourish in different tactical systems.
Born in Nigeria, Onuachu began his professional career with FC Ebedei before moving to Danish club FC Midtjylland, where he developed into one of Scandinavia’s most promising young forwards. His impressive performances earned him a transfer to Belgian giants Genk, where his career reached new heights.
During his time in Belgium, Onuachu established himself among Europe’s most prolific goalscorers. He won the Belgian Golden Boot after finishing as the league’s top scorer and was named the Belgian Professional Footballer of the Year following an outstanding campaign. His remarkable consistency attracted attention from several clubs across Europe.
That form eventually secured him a move to Southampton in the English Premier League. Although opportunities were limited in England and he struggled to replicate the scoring numbers that made him famous in Belgium, the striker never lost the confidence of Nigerian supporters or national team coaches.
His subsequent move to Trabzonspor proved to be the turning point. In Turkey, Onuachu rediscovered the confidence that had defined his best years, quickly becoming one of the club’s most important attacking players through a series of decisive goals and commanding performances.
His revival at club level also strengthened his position with Nigeria’s senior national team. Since making his Super Eagles debut in 2019, Onuachu has remained an important member of the squad, contributing valuable goals while offering a different attacking option because of his height, experience and ability to hold up play.
Interest from Saudi Arabia therefore comes as little surprise. The Saudi Pro League has emerged as one of football’s fastest growing competitions, attracting established stars with ambitious sporting projects and lucrative financial packages.
Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Al Ahli are keen to strengthen their attacking department and identified Onuachu as a player capable of making an immediate impact because of his experience in European football and his consistent scoring record.
Despite the financial attraction of a possible move, Trabzonspor have shown no intention of allowing negotiations to proceed without following the appropriate procedures. By referring the matter to FIFA, the Turkish club has signalled that it is prepared to defend its contractual rights while protecting one of its most valuable assets.
The complaint also serves as a reminder of the strict regulations governing international player transfers. Clubs seeking to sign contracted players are expected to negotiate first with the player’s employer before entering direct discussions with the footballer or his representatives.
For now, Onuachu has remained silent on the growing speculation surrounding his future. The Super Eagles striker has continued his pre season preparations with Trabzonspor while discussions continue behind the scenes.
Whether the dispute ends with FIFA’s involvement, fresh negotiations between the clubs or an eventual transfer agreement remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that Paul Onuachu’s future will remain one of the most closely watched stories involving Nigerian football this transfer window.
With Trabzonspor determined to keep their leading striker and Al Ahli reportedly eager to strengthen their squad, the coming weeks could prove decisive in shaping the next chapter of Onuachu’s career as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished forwards currently playing in Europe.
