Troost-Ekong leads calls for Eguavoen’s permanent stay as Super Eagles Coach

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong is spearheading the growing calls for Augustine Eguavoen to be offered the team’s head coach job on a permanent basis.

Troost-Ekong has been vocal in his support for Eguavoen, who took over as interim coach after Finidi George’s departure.

The captain praises Eguavoen’s leadership, tactical acumen, and positive impact on team morale and cohesion.

“Eguavoen is like a family member who has come back to the team,” Troost-Ekong said. “He knows the players, and we know him. He understands the Nigerian culture and the way we play football.”

Troost-Ekong‘s endorsement is significant, given his influence and leadership role within the team.

Eguavoen, a former Super Eagles player and coach, has demonstrated his capabilities during his interim tenure.

Despite being in charge for a short while, Eguavoen has rebuilt squad harmony that was glaringly missing under immediate past gaffer, Finidi George.

Troost-Ekong, Victor Osimhen and other few senior players had a frosty relationship with George, who is an ex-international.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has indicated that Eguavoen can keep the job if he wants it.

The Eguavoen Coaching File

Born on August 19, 1965, Eguavoen has established himself as one of the most successful coaches in Nigerian football history.

Eguavoen’s coaching career began in 2000 when he took charge of the Nigeria U-20 team, leading them to the final of the African Youth Championship in 2001.

This early success set the tone for his future achievements. He went on to coach the Nigeria U-23 team in 2002, followed by a stint at Sharks FC in 2008.

In 2010, Eguavoen was appointed caretaker coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s senior national team.

He reprised this role in 2021, leading the team to the knockout stage of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

His ability to steady the ship and achieve results in high-pressure situations has earned him a reputation as a reliable and skilled coach.

One of Eguavoen’s most notable achievements came in 2011 when he led Enyimba FC to the Nigerian Premier League title.

Eguavoen’s coaching style is characterized by defensive solidity, tactical awareness, and a strong emphasis on teamwork, discipline, and hard work.
