In a dramatic twist to the ongoing global trade standoff, United States President, Donald Trump, has on Wednesday April 9, 2025, announced a 90-day suspension of tarriff.

The suspension tariffs is  for all trading partners excluding China amid mounting international pressure and behind-the-scenes negotiations.

The announcement, which was made public through a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

This comes at a time when diplomatic efforts by over 75 countries have intensified to de-escalate the rising tensions in global trade.

Trump, known for his hardline stance on trade policies, disclosed that the decision was influenced by what he described as the “constructive posture” of several countries who have shown willingness to negotiate rather than retaliate.

Based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs, and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States.

“I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump posted.

However, China remains  exempt from this temporary reprieve, as Trump’s post did not indicate any shift in Washington’s tough posture towards Beijing.

Analysts say the exclusion of China signals that the U.S. president is still focused on holding the Asian giant accountable for what he perceives as unfair trade practices.
