WASHINGTON, D.C. — United States President Donald Trump has asserted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will likely have to accept any agreement Washington reaches with Iran, as fresh tensions in the Middle East threaten to undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Trump made the remarks following a new exchange of hostilities between Iran and Israel, insisting that the United States remains firmly in control of negotiations aimed at preventing a wider regional conflict. He reportedly stated that Netanyahu would have little choice but to accept a deal brokered by Washington, emphasizing that the direction of U.S. foreign policy would be determined by his administration.
The comments came after Iran launched a barrage of missiles toward northern Israel, marking the most significant breach of a fragile ceasefire that had largely held since April. Iranian officials said the attack was carried out in response to Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah-linked positions in Beirut.
Israeli authorities reported that the missiles were either intercepted by air defense systems or landed in open areas, resulting in no major casualties. However, military officials described the attack as a serious escalation and warned that Iran had committed what they termed a “grave mistake.”
The latest confrontation has heightened fears that months of diplomatic progress could unravel, potentially reigniting a broader regional conflict involving Israel, Iran, and allied groups across the Middle East. Security analysts have warned that continued exchanges between the two rivals could destabilize an already volatile region and complicate international peace efforts.
Despite the escalation, Trump expressed confidence that negotiations with Tehran remain on track. Reports indicate that he has urged Netanyahu to avoid immediate retaliation, arguing that a military response could jeopardize efforts to secure a broader agreement with Iran.
Iranian officials, meanwhile, warned that further attacks on Iranian interests or allied groups would trigger additional responses. Tehran has repeatedly maintained that any long-term agreement must address security concerns across the region and include commitments aimed at preventing future military confrontations.
The dispute also highlights growing strains between Washington and Jerusalem over how to manage relations with Iran. While Israel has traditionally favored a tougher approach toward Tehran, the Trump administration appears focused on preserving diplomatic channels and preventing another prolonged conflict in the region.
As international leaders call for restraint, attention is now focused on whether ongoing negotiations can withstand the latest violence and produce an agreement capable of easing tensions between two of the Middle East’s most formidable adversaries.
