US Navy Secretary John Phelan Resigns Amid Iran War

The United States Secretary of the Navy, John Phelan, has stepped down from his role with immediate effect, the Pentagon confirmed on Wednesday but without giving any clear reason for his sudden exit.

A Pentagon spokesperson, Sean Parnell, announced the development on X, adding that Undersecretary Hung Cao will take over in an acting capacity for now.

Phelan’s departure comes at a tense moment, with the U.S. still caught up in a broader conflict involving Iran. It also adds to a growing list of high-level military shake-ups under President Donald Trump.

In recent months, several top officials have either been dismissed or stepped aside. Among them is General Randy George, along with other senior officers. Earlier in 2025, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Charles Q. Brown Jr., was also removed without explanation.

The changes haven’t stopped there. Leaders across key branches — including the Navy, Coast Guard, and intelligence community — have been replaced or have retired earlier than expected.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has defended the moves, saying the president is simply putting his preferred team in place.

But critics, especially among Democratic lawmakers, are raising concerns. They worry the sweeping changes could blur the line between politics and the military, which has traditionally been seen as nonpartisan.

Adding to the unease, the Pentagon has also ordered a reduction in the number of active-duty generals and admirals — a move that’s likely to keep the debate going.
