Former Nigerian goalkeeper Ambrose Vanzekin has sensationally resigned as goalkeeper trainer of Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side Bendel Insurance, citing unfair treatment and meager pay.

Vanzekin, a silver medalist at the 2008 Olympics, had been with Bendel Insurance for four seasons but revealed he had been earning a paltry N75,000 (less than $100) per month for three years.

This, despite his impressive achievements and contributions to the team’s success.

The legendary goalkeeper expressed disappointment and frustration, stating that his salary was significantly lower than others in the team, who earn between N300,000 to N400,000 monthly.

“I couldn’t continue under such conditions,” Vanzekin said. “It’s demoralizing to be undervalued and underpaid despite my experience and achievements.”

Vanzekin submitted his resignation letter and has not returned to training since. His departure has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian football community.

*Reactions

Bendel Insurance management has yet to comment on Vanzekin’s resignation. However, fans and fellow footballers have taken to social media to express solidarity with the legendary goalkeeper.

“Ambrose Vanzekin deserves respect and fair compensation for his services,” tweeted former Nigerian international, Julius Aghahowa.

*Background

Ambrose Vanzekin had an illustrious playing career, featuring for Nigerian clubs like Rangers International and Akwa United. He also had stints abroad with Turkish and Belgian clubs.

As goalkeeper trainer at Bendel Insurance, Vanzekin played a crucial role in shaping the team’s goalkeeping department.

*Implications

Vanzekin’s resignation highlights the challenges faced by Nigerian football professionals, including poor remuneration and lack of appreciation.
