Wike Loyalist Ejekwu Clinches Rivers PDP Governorship Ticket

PORT HARCOURT – A political ally of former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, identified as Sam Ejekwu, has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The emergence of Ejekwu followed a consensus arrangement within the party structure, positioning him as the flagbearer of the PDP in the forthcoming governorship race.

Party insiders said the decision was reached after extensive consultations among key stakeholders and political blocs within the Rivers State chapter of the PDP, aimed at reducing internal conflict and presenting a united front ahead of the elections.

Ejekwu, who is widely described as a loyalist within the Wike political structure, is expected to lead the party’s campaign into what many analysts already consider a highly competitive and politically sensitive governorship contest in the state.

Stakeholders within the party noted that the consensus approach was adopted to strengthen internal cohesion and prevent a prolonged leadership struggle that could weaken the party’s chances in the general election.

They added that the decision also reflects ongoing efforts to consolidate influence within the PDP structure in Rivers State, where political alignments have remained dynamic in recent years.

The emergence of Ejekwu has already generated widespread political discussions across Rivers State, with supporters of the PDP expressing optimism about the party’s prospects in the upcoming election cycle.

Some party members believe his selection represents continuity within the existing political structure, particularly the influence network associated with the Wike political camp in the state.

Others, however, are carefully observing how the development may reshape internal party dynamics and influence relationships between different political blocs ahead of 2027.

Political observers have also noted that consensus candidacies often play a critical role in reducing internal party disputes, although they can sometimes raise questions about broader inclusion and democratic competition within party structures.

Ejekwu is expected to formally receive the party’s mandate in the coming days and begin consultations with local government stakeholders, party executives, and grassroots mobilizers across Rivers State.

He is also expected to outline his campaign strategy, focusing on key issues such as infrastructure development, youth employment, security, and economic growth in the oil-rich state.

As preparations for the 2027 general elections continue to intensify, analysts say the Rivers State governorship race is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched political contests in the South-South region.

Political watchers further note that the PDP’s internal consensus decision could either strengthen its electoral chances or trigger new realignments depending on how other aspirants and political stakeholders respond in the coming months.
