IBADAN, Nigeria — The League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland has disowned several fundraising groups falsely claiming affiliation with the organisation, urging Muslims and the general public to exercise caution to avoid falling victim to exploitation and fraudulent activities.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the league’s leadership expressed concern over the growing trend of individuals and groups using the name and identity of the organisation to solicit funds from unsuspecting members of the public, particularly during the ongoing Eid-el-Kabir celebrations and other Islamic occasions.
The clerics described the activities of these groups as fraudulent and warned that the league has not authorised any fundraising campaign outside its recognised channels. They advised Muslims to verify the authenticity of any fundraising initiative before making contributions.
According to the statement, the league remains committed to its core mandate of promoting Islamic values, unity, and social welfare, but has not mandated any group to raise funds on its behalf. The leadership called on security agencies to investigate and prosecute those behind the fraudulent activities.
The clerics also urged members of the public to report any suspicious fundraising activities to the league’s leadership or to the nearest police station. They stressed that the league’s identity and reputation should not be exploited for personal gain.
The League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland is one of the most prominent Islamic organisations in the South-West region, comprising leaders of mosques and Islamic scholars. The organisation has been at the forefront of promoting Islamic education, interfaith dialogue, and community development.
The warning comes amid increasing reports of fraud and impersonation targeting religious organisations and their followers. The clerics have called for vigilance and urged Muslims to be wary of schemes that may not be genuine.
