ABUJA, NIGERIA – A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has cleared former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election, affirming his eligibility under the Nigerian Constitution.
The ruling followed a legal challenge filed by an Abuja-based lawyer, Johnmary Jideobi, who had approached the court seeking to restrain Jonathan from presenting himself to any political party as a presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
The plaintiff also asked the court to direct the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to accept, process, or publish Jonathan’s name as a candidate in the forthcoming presidential race.
At the centre of the suit was a constitutional interpretation request, asking the court to determine whether sections of the 1999 Constitution, particularly Sections 1(1), (2), (3) and 137(3), disqualify or restrict the former president from contesting again.
Court Decision
Delivering judgment, Justice Peter Lifu held that Jonathan is constitutionally eligible to contest the presidential election and can participate in the 2027 electoral process.
The court’s decision effectively dismisses the request to bar him from seeking elective office, clearing the way for any political party willing to present him as its candidate.
Political Developments Around PDP
The ruling comes amid emerging political realignments within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where a faction led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki had reportedly granted Jonathan a waiver and adopted him as its preferred presidential candidate.
Political observers say the court’s verdict could reshape early political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially within opposition parties seeking strong candidates.
Reactions And Implications
The judgment has already begun generating political discussions across the country, with supporters and critics weighing its implications for Nigeria’s electoral landscape.
Analysts note that Jonathan remains a significant political figure whose potential return to the presidential race could influence party strategies and voter dynamics.
Looking Ahead
With the court’s clearance, attention is expected to shift toward political consultations, party negotiations, and possible alliances as the 2027 election cycle gradually takes shape.
Further developments are anticipated as political actors react to the ruling and position themselves ahead of the next general elections.
