2027: SDP chairman Gabam sparks controversy after closed-door talks with El-Rufai, Atiku allies

Shehu Gabam, the Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has stirred heated political debates after breaking his silence about a private meeting with former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai and allies of ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
According to Diaspora digital media (DDM), the meeting, held at the SDP national secretariat, has fueled speculation about potential political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
While rumors of a merger swirl, Gabam dismissed the idea of any official commitments from El-Rufai or Atiku’s allies to join the SDP.
Instead, he framed the discussions as part of a broader effort to unify individuals who prioritize Nigeria’s future over partisan interests.
“This was not about party affiliations. We’re engaging like-minded people committed to uplifting the country and improving the standard of living for all Nigerians,” Gabam explained.
According to the SDP chairman, the meeting was just one of many with dignitaries from across political divides aimed at addressing Nigeria’s growing instability.
Gabam stressed the importance of offering constructive solutions to the government.
“A national crisis affects everyone, irrespective of political loyalty. Our role is to ensure stability and provide actionable advice,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to Nigeria’s collective progress.
The meeting’s agenda also included reviewing Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
A PDP chieftain and close ally of Atiku Abubakar, Segun Showunmi, described the gathering as “strategic” in strengthening the opposition ahead of the upcoming elections.
He revealed that participants focused on assessing the current state of democratic engagement and planning a more united opposition front.
Although Gabam denied any immediate plans for a merger, he hinted at ongoing dialogues.
“Once we reach a conclusion on our collective path forward, Nigerians will be the first to know. We will hold a press conference to unveil our roadmap,” he assured.
Critics, however, remain skeptical of Gabam’s intentions, questioning whether the SDP is positioning itself to become a new power bloc or simply capitalizing on Nigeria’s political uncertainty.
Some have even accused the party of covertly seeking alliances that may undermine the current government.
As the country inches closer to 2027, the stakes are rising, and Gabam’s moves have undoubtedly added fuel to the political fire.
Whether the SDP’s initiatives will lead to transformative change or political upheaval remains to be seen.
