The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued a clarification regarding its recent announcement about a resit examination, confirming that the new initiative does not apply to Nigerian candidates.

The clarification comes amid confusion surrounding the news, which was reported by New Telegraph on January 6.

The report had suggested that WAEC was launching a new scheme allowing candidates who had not passed their previous exams to resit the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) papers earlier than usual.

To address the misinformation, Diaspora digital media (DDM) recorded that WAEC took to its official social media platform, X, where it provided an important update.

The examination body confirmed that the resit examination policy, often referred to as WASSCE PC1, is not applicable to candidates in Nigeria.

The post further emphasized that the initiative is not relevant to Nigerian students, as the scheme was directed toward candidates in other regions.

WAEC also explained that for those who have outstanding grades from previous examinations, they can register for the WASSCE (PC1) 2025.

This upcoming exam session will begin on January 24, 2025, and end on February 15, 2025.

According to the examination board, students whose results were canceled for reasons unrelated to malpractice, such as technical issues or other administrative concerns, are eligible to participate in this resit option.

The announcement also made it clear that this new policy was designed to assist candidates in fulfilling their academic requirements, particularly those who had encountered unforeseen circumstances during the original exams.

While this new opportunity is available for certain candidates, it is important to note that the resit is not a general opportunity for all students who may have failed their exams.

It is intended to address cases where candidates have faced exceptional situations outside of their control.

In conclusion, WAEC’s clarification serves to alleviate any misunderstandings regarding the scope of the resit examination initiative.

Nigerian students are not affected by this new policy, and those wishing to retake their exams or address outstanding grades must wait for the appropriate registration period for the WASSCE PC1 2025.
