26 Akwa Ibom Legislators receive N127.1 Million hardship allowances

26 lawmakers in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly received a total of N127.1 million as hardship allowance for the first and second quarters of 2024.
The report, which covers government expenditures from January to September 2024, highlights the introduction of the hardship allowance as a measure to compensate lawmakers for the economic challenges faced by the country.
The hardship allowance is part of a broader package of allowances received by the lawmakers, which also includes a legislative allowance of N45.4 million for the same period.
These allowances are in addition to their regular salaries, raising questions about the prioritization of funds in a state grappling with economic difficulties.
*Healthcare and Education Funding: A Mixed Picture
While the lawmakers received substantial allowances, the budget performance report also sheds light on the state’s spending in other critical sectors.
The Akwa Ibom State Government allocated N23.7 million for drugs, laboratory equipment, and medical supplies across state hospitals during the same period.
This allocation, though modest, reflects an effort to address the healthcare needs of the population.
However, the report reveals a concerning gap in funding for education.
Despite budgeting N5,013,090.00 as a Science Allowance for public schools in 2024, the state government failed to disburse any funds to science teachers in public schools within the reporting period.
This omission has sparked criticism from educators and stakeholders, who argue that such allowances are crucial for motivating teachers and improving the quality of science education in the state.
