Deputy governor’s impeachment proceedings begins next week in Nigerian state

The impeachment panel against deputy governor, Edo State, Phillip Shuabu, appointed by the Chief Judge of Edo State, Honourable Justice Daniel Okungbowa, is set to begin hearings on Wednesday, April 3rd, 2024, at 10:00 AM, it has been gathered.
The panel was established to investigate allegations of misconduct against the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Hon. Philip Shaibu. The panel will convene at the Judges Conference room in the New High Court Complex in Benin City.
Shuaibu has been at logger heads with the state governor, Godwin Obaseki, over succession plans by their party, The people’s Democratic Party, PDP.
Deputy governors hardly survives such inquisition in Nigeria the moment the governor has a say in the matter.
Parties involved in the proceedings and their legal representatives are required to be present, with the complainant expected to present their case on that day.
The panel was created following a resolution by the Edo State House of Assembly on March 19, 2024, which was forwarded to the Chief Judge.
The impeachment notice against the Deputy Governor was based on accusations of perjury and disclosure of government secrets, as announced by the Majority Leader of the House during a plenary session.
The seven-member panel, led by retired Justice S A Omonua, includes Prof. Theresa Akpoghome, Mr. Oghogho Ayodele Oviasu, and Dr. Andrew Oliha. Other members are Mr. Idris Abdulkareen, President Aigbokhan Esq., and Mariam Erakhoba Ilavbare Esq.
